Signs of spring

For some, it’s robins, tweeting in the garden. For others, it’s little snowdrop flowers poking their heads up between the ivy. For us, we know it’s spring in two ways. First, by the increase in joggers and bikers going up and down our street. Followed by the furious, indignant barking of our miniature Schnauzer, Canta (Cody, our terrier, has given over most of the “danger, danger” barking to her; he takes care of the yard).

Then last Sunday, on our way up to Lake Nockamixon, we spied another sure sign that spring is here. Oink Johnson’s BBQ stand is up and running. In case you’re not familiar with this great little food gem just north of Plumsteadville, see our post from last year, when Jack, who runs Jack’s Dog Farm, decided to share his culinary skills with the world, turning out wonderful, smokey ribs, pulled pork, chicken and beef brisket every weekend. And the sides (sigh). Homemade cole slaw, green beans & potatoes with ham hocks, baked beans and corn bread.

But don’t take our word for it. Take a drive this weekend and stop by on your way to…wherever (Suggestion: Chubby’s Dairy Barn is nearby in Plumsteadville, and oWowCow Creamery is up the road in Ottsville. You know. Dessert.)

The holidays come to Bucks County

I have to admit something. Just a couple of weeks ago I was worried that food events were going to slow down towards the holidays. I know that seems counter-intuitive – I mean, sometimes that seems the main activity this time of year – but not a lot was showing up for the calendar. But, whoa! – now that I look at the weekend, there are a lot of yummy activities.

For starters, what better way to get into the “holiday spirit” than sipping some spirits? The Bucks County Wine Trail is hosting a Holiday Celebration at all Bucks County wineries. Stop by Buckingham Valley Vineyards for some of their just-released Ruby Port or Champagne (officially, “sparkling wine”). I just had some recently at Andre’s Wine and Cheese Shop in Doylestown. More of a semi-dry Champagne and quite delicious. Need I say what a great gift it would make? Crossing Vineyards and Wycombe Vineyards also have some great activities in store for the weekend. Many of the wineries have special seasonal wines – like Spice Wines – just in time for the holidays.

Farmers’ Markets? You betcha. Stockton’s Indoor Farmers’ Market is off to a great start. They are open both Saturday and Sunday (see the Food Events in Bucks County for more details). The Wrightstown Farmers’ Market is having a mini-winter market this Saturday, pre-orders appreciated. And Parkside Orchid Nursery in Ottsville is hosting an indoor Holiday Farmers’ Market with local gift items for sale. The Kitchen Potager will be there with beautiful gift baskets of all local products. They flew off the shelves at last week’s Holiday Market at Linden Hill Gardens. Stop by Manoff Market Gardens in Solebury too at their Holiday Open House. Sip some cider and get the last of the season’s apples.

In addition to the above, several firehouses are hosting breakfasts, and there are cookie sales going on, seemingly everywhere!

Hanukkah begins tonight and continues for eight days, through next Saturday. Look for my upcoming post on some delectable potato pancakes (latkes). Get some homemade applesauce from Manoff’s to go with it!

Interested in sourcing your holiday gifts locally too this year? Check out two events this week that aim to help you do just that.

This Wednesday, December 2nd, the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance is sponsoring their 1st Annual Local Farms Holiday Event. Over sixteen farmers and producers from the Wrightstown, New Hope and Lower Makefield Farmers’ Markets will be offering special holiday gifts and gift baskets from their Bucks County farms and homes.

Come find cool stocking stuffers, unique gifts and yummy food items. There’ll be preserves, jams, jellies, and nut butters; handmade alpaca and woolen gifts; handmade candles from local beeswax; gourmet, freshly roasted, Fair Trade Coffees; handmade soap and lotions; door swags from freshly cut evergreens; gift certificates; and custom gift basket assembly. It all takes place at the Northampton Library Community Room at 25 Upper Holland Road, Richboro, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Then visit the Ottsville Holiday Festival at Linden Hill Gardens on Saturday, December 5th and Sunday, December 6th for more neat gifts. You’ll be able to browse beautiful creations by local artists, buy seasonal plants, topiaries and aromatic potted herbs, and sample sweet and savory winter fare. The event will be held in the cosy stone barn, with plenty of parking. They’ll have unusual poinsettias, as well as amaryllis and cyclamen in a range of holiday colors. Festivities begin at 9 am and continue until 3 pm, at Jerry Fritz Garden Design, 8230 Easton Road in Ottsville.

Hard to believe but today is the last day of the first year of the Linden Hill Farmers Market, the youngest Bucks County farmers’ market, which takes place every Friday afternoon in Ottsville at Linden Hill Gardens on Route 611. Take advantage of some sporadic sunshine this afternoon and visit them for the festivities.

Here’s the beautiful harvest items for sale today: Cauliflower (white and purple), broccoli, arugula, leeks, onions, shallots, garlic, head lettuce, daikon and watermelon radishes, purple top turnips, potatoes and sweet potatoes, butternut and pie pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, delicata squash, bok choy, kale and swiss chard, dill and cilantro, beets, celeriac, radicchio. A wide variety of Pumpkins and Gourds, Ornamental Corn, Popcorn, Corn stalks, Broomcorn, Butternut, Green, white, and gold Acorn, Spaghetti, Scarlet and Green Kabocha Squash, hot and sweet peppers, Sweet potatoes, red, blue, and banana potatoes, Beets, Collard Greens, Turnips, Radish, Eclipse Squash, Thyme, Oregano, Dill, Parsely, Sorrel, Onions, Carrots, Swiss Chard, eggs, and possibly Eggplant and Green beans.

And the fun activities include:

Weekend Eats in Bucks County

The forecast may not be sunny this weekend, but it is cooler and things are still happening. Kind of a relief after all the heat and humidity, and a nice taste of fall.

Alert to any backyard farmers currently overrun with tomatoes, zucchinis and squashes. Carousel Gardens, on Route 413/Durham Road just north of Newtown, is accepting any fresh produce and passing it on to Philabundance, the Delaware Valley food bank. Donations are accepted all day Friday (8 am to 6 pm) and Saturday mornings (8 am to noon). This continues until the last weekend in September. On both sides of the river you can get some good firehouse food this weekend. Friday night is Rib Night at the Union Fire Co. #1 on 230 North Main Street in Lambertville from 6 to 9:30 pm. Yum. Up in Ottsville, the volunteer fire company is having a Summer BBQ and Beer Bash Saturday evening from 6 to 10 pm (249 Durham Road). And Sunday morning, check out breakfast at the Haycock Fire Company, 850 Old Bethlehem Road, in Haycock, near Lake Nockamixon.

Speaking of breakfast, and peaches, Solly’s Farm Market will try again this Sunday to hold their famous Peach Pancake Breakfast. Eating commences at 9 am, going till noon, weather permitting. A Peach pancake breakfast will cost you $7 per person. Solly’s is at 707 Almshouse Road in Ivyland (near Richboro).

If it’s not too late, see if you can go to the Quakertown Rotary Clam Bake on Saturday in Springtown from 3 to 7 pm. A great menu for a great price (see our Food Events in Bucks County calendar for details). Also in the Quakertown area, the Bucks County Jazz and Wine Festival is taking place at McCoole’s Arts & Events Place at Main and Broad Streets in Quakertown.

Finally, yet another reason to eat ice cream. Local ice cream maker, Uncle Dave’s, is having a festival at Shady Brook Farm on Sunday from noon to 4 pm. You can always eat ice cream. Even if it’s raining. Cheer you up. Really.

Tidbits: Where the buffalo roam…in Bucks County

If you’ve frequented the local weekly farmers’ markets (and some local farm markets,) you already know that buffalo are being raised in Bucks County and are available for your eating pleasure. Today’s Intelligencer has a great article on two buffalo farmers – Backyard Bison and Hillside Farms. Rod Wieder, whose herd of 50 buffalo grazes on his Springfield Township farm, talks in the article about the trend towards pastured, naturally raised meat. Wieder sells his bison meat every week at the Linden Hill Farmers’ Market in Ottsville (Fridays, 3:30 – 7:30 pm). Gary and B.J. Schuler raise their buffalo in Telford, selling it at their farm store. They also run The Rising Sun Inn, where bison is a mainstay of the menu.

Marathons, Music and Markets

Many local farmers’ markets invite local chefs to cook and demonstrate. This weekend, Wrightstown Farmers’ Market will have Denis Chiappa from Carlow Cookery demonstrating how to make some great summer dishes, starting at 10:30 am.

At the Linden Hill Farmers’ Market, Chef David Zuckerman of Earl’s Bucks County (formerly Earl’s Prime) will be preparing market items on the grill. Darlene Kaminsky of Chestnut Hill Farm Gourmet Foods will be teaching how to can and preserve. Both will be doing demos at 4:30 & 6:30 pm.

Local Harvest Restaurant Week continues through Sunday, July 26th. SEE, a Lambertville-based community organization, is sponsoring the event in Lambertville and New Hope to raise awareness about sustainability – in our society, environment and economy (SEE). With cooperation from local restaurants, farms, food producers, and Zone 7 (a local foods distribution business), SEE is bringing the best of the region’s local harvest to local restaurant tables. If you eat at one of the participating restaurants, you’ll be able to enjoy dishes specially prepared for the event using the finest local ingredients. Check out SEE’s website for more information about their mission, more details about the restaurant week, and a list of participating restaurants (which includes practically all of the good ones in Lambertville).

The Farm-to-Table Dinner benefiting The Heritage Conservancy is coming up soon, on Saturday, August 1st so buy your tickets soon. The catering will be done by Soup to Nuts Caterers and Earl’s Restaurant in Peddler’s Village, which recently changed its menu and concept to focus on local, farm-fresh ingredients. Price will be $45 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Heritage Conservancy, a land conservation organization here in Bucks County. It will be held at the historic Lindsay Farm in Warminster.

Let’s go for ice cream

Everyone has their favorite ice cream place. Usually it’s local, and maybe because it’s associated with sweetness and warm summer evenings, people tend to be fiercely loyal.

That’s why we are not going to rate ice cream purveyors in Bucks County (ha!), or even attempt to be comprehensive in our list. But for those of you interested in wandering the county, comparing vanillas, chocolates and peanut butter-chocolate-graham-whatever swirls, here’s a short list, starting in Upper Bucks and moving south. We did, however, skip franchise places, like Rita’s and Dairy Queen, as good as they might sometimes be.

Thanks to our guest blogger, Rich Baringer, for his research in Upper Bucks, and to various other friends who have recommended their favorite places.

We hope to update this list as we get a chance to visit them, and add more information, so please let us know your favorite place, and why you love it. Send us an email, or drop a comment below.

Rosemarie’s Italian Ice (Quakertown), 304 W. Broad Street, 215.536-3220 “A million flavors” of ice cream, plus water ice and gelato.

Grida’s (Richlandtown), 36 N. Main St, 215.536-2691 Good old-fashioned walk-up food stand. Great place to hang with friends or pick up to take home. Locally owned for over forty years, with a big menu in addition to ice cream. Soft-serve dipped in chocolate is a favorite.

Sundae School (Hilltown), 401 W. Schoolhouse Rd., 215.723-4123‎Housed in the old Pennville Schoolhouse – they even have the names and pictures of those who attended school there. Lots of Hershey’s ice cream flavors as well as smoothies, sundaes, Italian ice, candy, ice cream cakes, and chocolate covered bananas. Very friendly staff with an old-fashioned feel inside and outside seating for hanging out. See our Tidbits post on the Sundae School here.

Owow Cow Creamery (Ottsville), at the intersection of Routes 563 & 412, near Rt. 611, 610.847.7070 All natural, organic, small batch, handcrafted ice cream, “Italian” style (think rich and dense) made on-site sourcing ingredients from local farms. Outside seating. Just imagine – you can eat healthy, great ice cream and support local farmers. (see below for their Wrightstown location, opened July 2011)

Chubby’s Dairy Barn (Plumsteadville), right behind the Plumsteadville Inn, near the intersection of Route 611 and Stump Road, 215.766.7554 Very family- and community-oriented (hosting Cruise nights, local kids sports teams, movie viewings, ice cream cookie nights), serving Nelson’s ice cream (from Royersford). Extremely friendly staff – even have treats for dogs who visit. Take home some of their new Chubby’s Reserve ice cream too, including flavors like Dulce de Leche, Pistachio and the Minister of Defense (white chocolate ice cream, white chocolate chips and white chocolate crunch – named after Reggie White!)

Del Val Creamery @ The Market by Shady Brook Farm at Delaware Valley College (Doylestown), 2100 Lower State Road Locally made by Uncle Dave’s ice cream in Yardley (who also sells at Shady Brook Farm Market). Made from 100 percent super premium Jersey cow milk, from independently owned Pennsylvania dairy farms and using Shady Brook produce – like raspberries, strawberries and peaches – in the ice cream whenever possible. Sweet Pea Creams & Confections (Newtown), 254 N. Sycamore St. (Goodnoe’s Corner), 215.968.0466 Own-make ice cream in 22 flavors, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, ice cream cakes and pies, and homemade candies.

Goodnoe Farm Dairy Bar (Newtown) 4 South Sycamore Street, 215.968.3544. The tradition continues. Goodnoe’s was the place to go for ice cream for 40 years, back when Newtown was surrounded by farms. Now the next generation is making ice cream again, using the family recipes. The recently opened store sells their homemade hand-dipped ice cream in 12 flavors, offers 15 kinds of sundaes, and milkshakes.

Tanner Brothers Dairy (Ivyland/Richboro), 1070 Hatboro Road, 215-357-1716 Tanner’s had been in business for over 100 years as a working dairy farm so you know the ice cream is fresh. Their produce selection and prices are great too, year-round.

Uncle Dave’s (Yardley) at Shady Brook Farm, 931 Stony Hill Road, 215-968-1670 Locally made from 100 percent super premium Jersey cow milk, from independently owned Pennsylvania dairy farms and using Shady Brook produce – like raspberries, strawberries and peaches – in the ice cream whenever possible.

Yardley Ice House (Yardley boro), 77 S. Main St., 215.321.9788 Family-owned and run. Gourmet Italian Water Ice (in 22 flavors), gelati, soft serve custard, milk shakes and malts, ice cream sundaes, blend-ins and ice cream floats.

Zebra Striped Whale (Newtown), 12 S. State St., 215.860.4122 This local favorite on State Street in Newtown Boro opened in December 2004. It is family-owned and operated, dedicated to providing customers with premium quality ice cream, coffee, and desserts.

Dairy Delite (Levittown), 972 Woodbourne Rd, 215.547.1636‎ This hugely popular ice cream place has several locations in Lower Bucks. From what we’ve heard, portions are big and the lines are long. Thanks to Donnie at The Pineville for this tip. Gotta check it out.

And on the other side of the river…

It’s Nutts (Titusville), 1381 River Road, 609.737.0505 Convenient for Bucks County folks in Upper Makefield and Washington Crossing area. Good ice cream, interesting flavors, outside seating right off of River Road/Route 29.

Summertime, when the living is easy…

Finally! A good weekend forecast. Or should I not jinx it?

As usual, lots of good things happening this weekend. I think the Linden Hill Farmers’ Market, which just opened at the end of May, has had the most rainy days. So, please, go check them out, Fridays from 3:30 to 7:30 pm in Ottsville.

Crossing Vineyards and Winery is continuing their outdoor music series with the brass ensemble, Nassau Brass. General admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the gate. Wine and cheese, or a home-style buffet is available from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm ($25 per person + tax, includes V.I.P. reserved seating). Also, Sangria Sundays continues at the Chaddsford Winery and Tasting Room in Lahaska (Peddlers Village).

The Indian Valley Farmers’ Market will be hosting the 2009 Field to Table Festival from 10 am to 3 pm in Telford. This year the festival will feature a “Berried” Treasure berry contest. Bring your best Berry Creation to be judged the winner.

July 4th – National Barbecue Day?

Actually, no. It turns out that May is National Barbecue Month. I guess there was some other major event being celebrated on July 4th so they decided it wouldn’t be appropriate.

Not many major food events happening this weekend but that’s okay. It seems an American tradition to have cook-outs on July 4th with family and friends. Check out our online poll (to the right, on the sidebar) and vote on your favorite place to buy meat in Bucks County. For our veggie friends, stop by some of the great Bucks County farmers’ markets listed below for good stuff to grill.

We’ve included the Riverside Symphonia’s annual July 4th concert in our listings. Even though it’s not officially a food event, if you’ve ever been then you know there’s a lot of food going on. A friend once called it, “competitive picnic-ing.” The gates open at 6 pm and folks flood in with everything from the extravagant (candelabras and china) to the simple. The concert starts at 8 pm and fireworks follow. Try to get tickets ahead of time.

The Indian Valley Farmers’ Market begins its season this Saturday in Telford. July 11th they will be hosting the 2009 Field to Table Festival from 10 am to 3 pm. This year the festival will feature a “Berried” Treasure berry contest. Bring your best Berry Creation to be judged the winner.
