I tend to drive the same route to and from work everyday and, although there are a few ways I could get home that would take about the same time, for two years I’ve stuck to my routine. Then…there was a road closing. (A strange occurrence in Bucks County, right?) So, I started trying new routes and, as I was driving on Jacksonville Rd., out of the corner of my eye I saw a sandwich board sign that read “Ivyland Country Store Now Open Saturdays.” I was intrigued because, due to the recent detours, I had just discovered the Ivyland borough and was quickly falling in love with their adorable little town and park.

Turns out I had passed the store before, but hadn’t noticed it. Nestled in a residential area, I was surprised to find a bustling deli. The menu is standard fare with a lot to choose from and quite a selection of prepared foods, most of which are homemade, and anything that isn’t, is delivered daily. The chicken salad (their secret recipe!) and seafood pasta are among their most popular specialties, as is the hand-carved turkey sandwich. A creature of habit (see previous paragraph), I, of course, haven’t moved past getting anything besides breakfast sandwiches and tater tots, because they are available all day and have become a part of our weekend routine.

Open for breakfast and lunch, the store gets most of its business from locals and the neighboring industrial park, which is evident if you stop by during the lunch rush on a weekday and see the party trays being assembled for company meetings.

Originally built in 1876, the building first served as a frame store and then as a dry goods store. Current owner, Jimmy Primodie, has been running the deli for more than 17 years and has kept the old-fashioned country store feeling alive—you can still buy penny candy, help out with a jigsaw puzzle, flip through the New York Times anthology, or chat with the friendly faces behind the counter and locals sipping coffee. The store’s roots in the community go beyond the history of the building; the deli is a presence in the borough, sponsoring the firefighters’ breakfasts as well as donating food to the Ivyland Peach Festival in August.

Although visiting the Ivyland Country Store feels like a blast from the past, they definitely have their heads in the present, with a presence on Facebook, where they announce daily specials, and a website that offers online ordering. Delivery is available as well at lunch time. This summer, the store began opening on Saturdays, which is a treat for those of us who can’t get there during the week and work (way) outside the delivery radius!

I am lucky enough to pass Solly’s Brothers Farm Market in Ivyland on my drive home from work. Many delicious last-minute dinner plans were created by what I found there this summer. And now that fall is here I have been enjoying their beautiful displays of mums and pumpkins each day. So in late September when a giant pumpkin appeared on their lawn and signs for their pumpkin and apple U-Pik weekends were up, I knew I’d have to check it out.

Solly’s has all the elements for a fun afternoon of pumpkin picking: hayrides, hot apple cider, a children’s spooky bounce, a pumpkin carving station for kids, and, of course, a large patch full of pumpkins! I went last Sunday around 2pm; the weather was absolutely perfect and I wasn’t the only one to have noticed – the parking lot was completely full.

I immediately wanted to take a picture of the giant pumpkin and waited a few minutes to do so as families posed with the large gourd (which is illuminated at night). The hayride line was long, so next I went right for the pumpkin patch. I had been hearing about a pumpkin drought this fall because of all the rain, but it seemed as if Solly’s had been spared from the full wheelbarrows of pumpkins leaving the patch that afternoon and the carts of pumpkins out in front of the market. I wandered the patch for a little while before selecting two pumpkins just right for carving.

Lots of pumpkins at Solly's

I went inside to pay for the pumpkins and found that they still had a great selection of fruits and vegetables, as well as a large selection of homemade pies and apple and pumpkin butters, in addition to their usual selection of local honey, jam, and preserves.

Although Solly’s will have pumpkins through Thanksgiving, the last U-Pik weekend festivities will be this weekend 11am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday, so there is still time left to pick a perfect pumpkin for Halloween carving!

The forecast may not be sunny this weekend, but it is cooler and things are still happening. Kind of a relief after all the heat and humidity, and a nice taste of fall.

Alert to any backyard farmers currently overrun with tomatoes, zucchinis and squashes. Carousel Gardens, on Route 413/Durham Road just north of Newtown, is accepting any fresh produce and passing it on to Philabundance, the Delaware Valley food bank. Donations are accepted all day Friday (8 am to 6 pm) and Saturday mornings (8 am to noon). This continues until the last weekend in September. For more information, call Carousel Gardens at 215.598.0202 or see Philabundance’s Web site. (Non-perishables accepted too.)

On both sides of the river you can get some good firehouse food this weekend. Friday night is Rib Night at the Union Fire Co. #1 on 230 North Main Street in Lambertville from 6 to 9:30 pm. Yum. Up in Ottsville, the volunteer fire company is having a Summer BBQ and Beer Bash Saturday evening from 6 to 10 pm (249 Durham Road). And Sunday morning, check out breakfast at the Haycock Fire Company, 850 Old Bethlehem Road, in Haycock, near Lake Nockamixon.

Speaking of breakfast, and peaches, Solly’s Farm Market will try again this Sunday to hold their famous Peach Pancake Breakfast. Eating commences at 9 am, going till noon, weather permitting. A Peach pancake breakfast will cost you $7 per person. Solly’s is at 707 Almshouse Road in Ivyland (near Richboro).

If it’s not too late, see if you can go to the Quakertown Rotary Clam Bake on Saturday in Springtown from 3 to 7 pm. A great menu for a great price (see our Food Events in Bucks County calendar for details). Also in the Quakertown area, the Bucks County Jazz and Wine Festival is taking place at McCoole’s Arts & Events Place at Main and Broad Streets in Quakertown.

Finally, yet another reason to eat ice cream. Local ice cream maker, Uncle Dave’s, is having a festival at Shady Brook Farm on Sunday from noon to 4 pm. You can always eat ice cream. Even if it’s raining. Cheer you up. Really.

Get details on any of these events at our Food Events in Bucks County calendar. Have a wonderful weekend.

Usually it’s local, and maybe because it’s associated with sweetness and warm summer evenings, people tend to be fiercely loyal.

That’s why we are not going to rate ice cream purveyors in Bucks County (ha!), or even attempt to be comprehensive in our list. But for those of you interested in wandering the county, comparing vanillas, chocolates and peanut butter-chocolate-graham-whatever swirls, here’s a short list, starting in Upper Bucks and moving south. We did, however, skip franchise places, like Rita’s and Dairy Queen, as good as they might sometimes be.

Thanks to our guest blogger, Rich Baringer, for his research in Upper Bucks, and to various other friends who have recommended their favorite places.

We hope to update this list as we get a chance to visit them, and add more information, so please let us know your favorite place, and why you love it. Send us an email, or drop a comment below.

Rosemarie’s Italian Ice (Quakertown), 304 W. Broad Street, 215.536-3220 “A million flavors” of ice cream, plus water ice and gelato.

Grida’s (Richlandtown), 36 N. Main St, 215.536-2691 Good old-fashioned walk-up food stand. Great place to hang with friends or pick up to take home. Locally owned for over forty years, with a big menu in addition to ice cream. Soft-serve dipped in chocolate is a favorite.

Sundae School (Hilltown), 401 W. Schoolhouse Rd., 215.723-4123‎Housed in the old Pennville Schoolhouse – they even have the names and pictures of those who attended school there. Lots of Hershey’s ice cream flavors as well as smoothies, sundaes, Italian ice, candy, ice cream cakes, and chocolate covered bananas. Very friendly staff with an old-fashioned feel inside and outside seating for hanging out. See our Tidbits post on the Sundae School here.

Owow Cow Creamery (Ottsville), at the intersection of Routes 563 & 412, near Rt. 611, 610.847.7070 All natural, organic, small batch, handcrafted ice cream, “Italian” style (think rich and dense) made on-site sourcing ingredients from local farms. Outside seating. Just imagine – you can eat healthy, great ice cream and support local farmers. (see below for their Wrightstown location, opened July 2011)

Chubby’s Dairy Barn (Plumsteadville), right behind the Plumsteadville Inn, near the intersection of Route 611 and Stump Road, 215.766.7554 Very family- and community-oriented (hosting Cruise nights, local kids sports teams, movie viewings, ice cream cookie nights), serving Nelson’s ice cream (from Royersford).

This is what they call a British summer. Rain, cool temperatures, with the sun popping out every now and then just to tease you. The really annoying part is that according to my sister, England is getting our summer weather right now. It’s just not fair. Even the farmers are getting tired of this weather.

But there is lots of cool stuff happening this weekend. Crossing Vineyards and Winery is kicking off their Outdoor Summer Music Series on Friday night with the Lynn Randall Quartet doing the Great American Songbook. There are two Strawberry Festivals happening, one in Hatboro and one in Quakertown. And, of course, there’s still plenty of pick-your-own strawberries around too (see our post below). The Milford Township Volunteer Fire Company will be finishing up their week-long Carnival, and in addition to a firehouse breakfast at the Ivyland Volunteer Fire Company, there’s a chicken BBQ dinner at the Chalfont Firehouse.

Last but not least, don’t forget to stop in at your local farmers’ market this week. In addition to the weekend markets listed below, Springtown has their market on Wednesdays, Lower Makefield and New Hope are on Thursdays. Local veggies and fruits include healthy greens (lettuce, chard, spinach, radish, collard, mustard, broccoli rabe), radishes and turnips, and, of course, strawberries.

Check out our online calendar, Food Events in Bucks County for more details on any of the events below.

It’s a little soggy right now out in our local strawberry fields but the next week or so may be your last chance to eat these wonderful strawberries so get out there as soon as the sun pops back out.

We stopped by Shady Brook Farm on Sunday and I picked up their flyer, “Tips on how to pick-your-own strawberries.” Here’s a few of the good ones:

Pick only plump, red berries. Berries will not ripen once they are picked. The smaller berries are often the most flavorful.

Pick them gently. Strawberries are tender and bruise easily if they are squeezed so pick them gently. Grasp the stem just above the berry and twist gently to remove the berry.

Don’t overfill your container. Heaping strawberries more than 5 inches deep will damage the lower berries.

After rain, pick only berries you plan to eat soon. Strawberries rot quickly if the weather is rainy so, after it rains, only pick berries you plan to eat immediately.

Cool your berries as soon as possible. Strawberries picked during the heat of the day will not keep as well as berries picked early in the morning or on cooler days.

Don’t wash the berries until you are ready to use them. Washing will make them more prone to spoiling. Fresh picked strawberries may last only two or three days in the refrigerator so freeze any unused berries to enjoy later.

There are many places in Bucks that you can pick-your-own strawberries. Here’s a few but for a complete list, see the the Penn State Extension website or the PickYourOwn website. Call or check the farm’s website for times and availability (check to see if the rain has affected harvesting).

Brumbaugh’s Farm, 2575 County Line Rd, Telford,
215-723-3508

Center Farm, 2224 Forest Grove Rd, Furlong,
215-794-7702

Hellerick Farm, Doylestown

None Such Farms, Buckingham (update: no PYO strawberries as of 6/16/09; check later if the sun comes out!)

Shady Brook Farm, Yardley

Snipes Farm, Morrisville
