Animals are more than ever a test of our character, of mankind’s capacity for empathy and for decent, honorable conduct and faithful stewardship. We are called to treat them with kindness, not because they have rights, power or a claim to equality, but in a sense, because they don’t. They all stand unequal and powerless before us.”

- Mathew Scully

If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, you already know my passions – local food, good causes, and my family – which includes two rescue dogs, Cody, a terrier mutt, and Canta, a mini-schnauzer, that we are grateful for each day. (Well…maybe not when Canta is barking incessantly.)

And if you also care about dogs, and have lived in Bucks County for a few years, you have probably heard about Lulu’s Rescue, a pretty special kind of rescue organization, begun in January 2010. They save dogs who are on “death row” in community shelters, about to end their days because the right home hasn’t been found yet. Lulu’s Rescue is made up of dedicated volunteers with over 30 collective years in rescue, foster, and adoption placement. They are all-breed inclusive, and rather than adopt the dogs out on a “first come first served” basis, they work to find the home that is the best possible match.

In 2010, Lulu’s Rescue pulled, vetted and successfully placed almost 300 dogs into permanent homes in our community. Additionally, Lulu’s Rescue collected and donated almost 4,000 pounds of dog food and needed supplies for shelters in the southern United States. In 2011, Lulu’s Rescue anticipates successfully vetting and finding permanent adoptive homes for more than 500 homeless dogs.

That’s impressive.

So, what does this have to do with local food? On Saturday, July 16, Lulu’s Rescue will hold their biggest fundraiser to date, Eat, Bark, Bid, including a Farm-to-Table dinner, live and silent auctions, all to be held at the famous Rago Arts & Auction Center in Lambertville, New Jersey. In addition there will be a $100 artwork sale by well known local artists, and a Bucks County Antique Road Show corner featuring appraisers from the popular TV program, as well as live music, and the debut of a video by respected Washington filmmaker Brannon Shiflett about Lulu’s Rescue. Max Hansen Caterers will be providing the delicious food, much of it sourced locally, including hormone- and antibiotic-free, and sustainably raised, beef from None Such Farms, great organic greens from Blue Moon Acres, also in Buckingham, and organic vegetables from Gravity Hill Farm in Lambertville and Comeback Farm in Asbury, New Jersey.

Proceeds from this event will be used to do Lulu’s Rescue’s first mobile spay/neuter outreach program and community education. Tickets are $150 per person, with opportunities for sponsorship at all levels. For more information, see their website here.

We’re fortunate here, in that with a little help from hoop houses and green houses, local farms are starting to offer the first crops of the growing season.

We can also enjoy the fruits of last year’s labor – with locally grown and vinted wines, and crafted artisan cheeses. All these will come together in the first Spring Wine Farm-to-Table Dinner of the season at Crossing Vineyards & Winery this Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 7:30 pm. I’ll be the guest speaker, talking about the local food scene and sharing tidbits about the producers who brought the wonderful food to our table. If you come you’ll also learn about the sustainable practices Crossing Vineyards has been implementing over the last couple of years, to decrease their energy use and produce fine wine.

The cost is $95 per person and includes five courses, each paired with Crossing Vineyards’ internationally-acclaimed wines. Take a look at this delicious menu – the wine alone is worth the price of admission.

It’s a new year, and surprisingly I’m in a good mood about it. I usually burrow in this time of year, grumbling about the cold and longing for the appearance of spring vegetables and baseball season. Allow me one last look at 2010, however, as we celebrate positive food trends in our neck of the woods.

More farmers’ markets. In 2010 we had TWELVE farmers’ markets throughout the county. From Springtown, Indian Valley, Perkasie and Ottsville in Upper Bucks, to Wrightstown, Doylestown, New Hope, Plumsteadville and Warrington in Central Bucks, and Lower Makefield, Feasterville and Langhorne in Lower Bucks. A big welcome back to Perkasie, after a hiatus, and welcome to new markets in Feasterville and Warrington. Of course, the big entrance onto the farmers’ market scene this year was the Stockton (Indoor) Farmers’ Market, which officially opened in November 2009 but really got it’s footing in 2010. For a listing of all of the markets, including year-round farm markets, see our post on Bucks County Farm Markets 2010 (the only one missing is Feasterville; didn’t have any info at time of publishing).

Lots more Farm-to-Table Dinners. In case you’ve been burrowing your head in the ground, and you’ve missed this wonderful phenomenon, let me explain. A farm-to-table dinner is an event celebrating seasonal foods, usually prepared by local chefs, using local ingredients and eating al fresco, hopefully in some bucolic setting like a field or restored barn. Kristen Perry of the Kitchen Potager in Ottsville organized several excellent dinners last summer, highlighting not just the food but in one instance offering a day-long cooking class by Chef Jim Hamilton, and a butchering class in October by Chef Matt Ridgway. Just to give you a taste of some of the dinners from last season, check out our posts: September farm-to-table dinners and Farm-to-Table…to mouth. And look out for them next summer. Not to be missed.

More Community Farms, or CSAs. A community-supported-agriculture farm allows members to buy a share of that season’s produce. Most farms offer a weekly (full) or bi-weekly (half) share, picked up by members, with some vegetables “pick-your-own.” It’s a great way to eat very fresh vegetables grown locally – and to support local farmers. In Bucks County we now have TWELVE CSAs, including a couple of new ones started just this year. It’s not too late to sign up for a share. See our post for contact information: CSAs: It’s like having your own farm. Don’t wait – shares fill up quickly this time of year.

Ice cream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. Yessiree, it was a good year for Bucks County ice cream lovers. We all put a couple of pounds on due to the great ice cream made locally. Goodnoe’s (Newtown) and oWowCow Creamery (Ottsville) both came back strong and delicious in 2010 with more flavors and fans. Chubby’s Dairy Barn (Plumsteadville) introduced their own house brand, Chubby’s Reserve, yummy, interesting flavors available for take-out. See our post on this new entrant, Chubby’s ice cream to-go. Uncle Dave’s Ice Cream continued to please both at Shady Brook Farm and The Market at Del Val – and added Uncle Dave’s Old Fashioned Soda to their product line, available in Root Beer, Diet Root Beer, Orange, and Black Cherry. And a big welcome to Half-Pint Kitchen, making their super premium gourmet ice cream, sorbet and gelato right at the Stockton Farmers’ Market. My favorite? Salted Caramel (sigh).

Wines. Welcome to our newest Bucks County vineyard, Unami Ridge Winery in Quakertown, producing Chardonnay, Scheurebe, Apple, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Amwell Valley Winery in Ringoes, New Jersey “reopened” this year under new management as Old York Cellars. They are producing European-style wines, like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Riesling and some fruit wines coming soon. See their website to learn more. Also just over the river, Terhune Orchards in Princeton is now selling wine made from their wonderful fruit.

Cheese, wonderful cheese. One final note. Many people in Bucks and the river towns are extremely happy that Bobolink Dairy & Bakeyard moved to Milford, New Jersey this past spring from their former home in North Jersey. They are making some of the finest cheese in these parts and we are just thrilled to have them closer to home. See their website for ordering information and go up to the farm for a tour, some great cheese and some delicious bread.

Crisp, sunny days. Cool nights. Crunchy leaves underfoot. If I didn’t know it was fall by these familiar things, all I need to do is look at our food events calendar for the culinary equivalent – apples, wine, beer and harvest festivals. Sandwiched between a hot, dry summer and a cold winter to come, we have to enjoy autumn while we can, and grasp every beautiful moment.

Apples? If you missed our post earlier this week, check out Apple Sightings for where you can buy and pick a wide variety of apples. Or go to one of the apple festivals this weekend – one at The Market at Del Val College in Doylestown or another one at Terhune Orchards in nearby Princeton.

Beer anyone? How about the Beer Festival at McCoole’s in Quakertown, or the Rockin’ Brewfest in Trenton, both on Saturday? Next weekend is the Newtown Blues and Brews (Sept 25), not to be confused with the Newtown BrewFest, which is happening on October 16th. Whew.

<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-5319" title="Grapes at Crossing Vineyards; photo by L. Keep an eye on the calendar over the next month for some great harvest and wine releases at area wineries, like the Cabernet Savignon Wine Release at Alba Vineyard, in Milford, this Saturday, or the Harvest Bootcamp at Unionville Vineyards in Ringoes next weekend. Alba Vineyard will also be celebrating their Grand Harvest Festival next weekend, and Crossing Vineyards will host their annual Harvest Festival the weekend of October 9th and 10th.

Eating out in the field. There are also several farm-to-table dinners this weekend that may still have tickets available. Check out our post from last week, September farm to table dinners, listing all the events with contact information.

Of course, our local farmers’ markets are still in full swing with lots of veggies, meat, cheese, baked goods, preserves and honey, to mention just a few delicacies. Grab the last of tomatoes, corn and even some peaches here and there.

For more details on any of these events, please go to our full calendar, Food Events in Bucks County.

It’s here. It’s official. Even with a little hot weather today, there is no doubt about it. September is here, along with lots of great food events. In particular, we have a whole crop of farm-to-table dinners coming up that I want to highlight.

This Sunday, September 12th, the Bucks County Symphony hosts A Symphony of Flavors, their third annual wine and food pairing event, at the beautiful Prallsville Mills in Stockton, NJ. A specially selected group of “boutique wines” will be matched with dishes created by some of the best local chefs. Marnie Old, Philadelphia based wine author, educator, and sommelier, will provide expert commentary at the Patron Party, and will discuss current trends in wine at the main tasting event.

Participating restaurants include Café at Rosemont in Rosemont, NJ, The Waterwheel Restaurant in Doylestown, PA, Jake’s Restaurant in Flemington, NJ, Jack’s Roadhouse in Lahaska, PA, Erini Restaurant in Ewing, NJ, Maize Restaurant in Perkasie, PA, Vine & Fig Tree Bistro in Doylestown, PA and Cal’s Comfort Café, Milford, NJ. Bucks County Biscotti in Perkasie and The Coffee Scoop in Pipersville will provide dessert and coffee.
Next weekend on Sunday, September 19th you’ve got a hard choice. There are TWO farm to table dinners in Bucks County and one in Hunterdon, all with great food and chefs. Zone 7, the local food distributor, is partnering with Manoff Market Gardens in Solebury to host a delicious dinner from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. Mark Miller and his team from Hamilton’s Grill Room will showcase the best offerings of the farm, with a strong emphasis on Manoff ’s fruits and vegetables, in a special four-course meal with complimentary wines specifically chosen to accompany each course from Crossing Vineyards & Winery in Washington Crossing, PA. The Dinners On The Farm series, which combines behind-the-scenes farm tours with fresh and seasonal meals prepared by luminary local chefs, will host the final dinner in this year’s series in October at Blooming Glen Farm in Perkasie, PA with Chef Vincent Peterson of Kindle Café in Lambertville, NJ. Tickets are $135 per person. For more information or to register, visit www.freshfromzone7.com.

Next choice? Equally tempting. How about a farm to table dinner at None Such Farms, featuring their famous farm-raised beef and farm-grown produce, all prepared by Chef Max Hansen? Al Fresco on the Farm will take place on Sunday, September 19, from 5 pm to 9:30 pm. Check out the wonderful menu online. Tickets are $125 per person, and proceeds will benefit the Food Pantry of Fisherman’s Mark in Lambertville and the Doylestown Food Pantry. To purchase tickets, stop in at None Such Farm Market or call them at 215.794.5201, ext. 2.

Finally, also next Sunday, the Acme Screening Room, which shows interesting and fun movies in Lambertville year around, is hosting a farm to table dinner and vacation auction at the Chimney Hill Estate in Lambertville. Dinner will be prepared by Chef Chris Georgett using seasonal ingredients donated by local farms, and will include entrée (meat & vegetarian option) and desert provided by The Chocolate Box (it’s also BYOB). The event takes place from 4 pm to 7:30 pm. The highlight will be the auction including vacation packages in Lake Tahoe, Myrtle Beach. Tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at door You can buy tickets at this website.

And that’s just September. I didn’t mention the great event occurring at Linden Hill Gardens in Ottsville on September 25th because, well, it’s sold out. I didn’t want you to feel bad. Chef, architect, and local restaurant icon Jim Hamilton, of Hamilton’s Grill Room, has been working with Kristen Perry, of The Kitchen Potager at Linden Hill Gardens, to build an outdoor, earthen oven. On that Saturday he’ll be conducting one of his famous “Cooking Class Dinners.” One person arrives at 2:30 pm for the class and dinner preparation, the other person comes at 6:30 pm as the guest for dinner in the lovely barn at Linden Hill. When I chatted with Jim at the Pineville Tavern last month, he was really excited. He loves doing the classes, especially with the outdoor oven. Hopefully Kristen will schedule another similar event next year. Keep an eye on her website or email her at kristin@lindenhillgardens.com for more information about future events, including another ”class-dinner” in October.

If I’ve left any events out that you know of, please let me know. Just email us at info@buckscountytaste.com.

You get to enjoy fresh, well-prepared food by local chefs, meet new people and relax on a beautiful summer evening. Some are fundraisers, and some are just for fun. Either way, go to at least one this summer.

Here’s a few that are going on this month in Bucks or nearby.

On Tuesday, July 13th, Chef Ed Coss will host his third annual Farm to Table dinner to benefit the Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance at his Milford, NJ restaurant, the Milford Oyster House. Coss has planned a menu using only ingredients from the Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance Dvoor Farm Farmers’ Market.

Chef Ed confers with Farmer Mark of Comeback Farms about the best salad greens to use for the upcoming Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance Benefit dinner on July 13.

The dinner begins at 6:30 PM with radish crostini and peach champagne cocktails in the bar area. Dinner begins at 7 PM with squash blossoms stuffed with Purely Farm herbed ground pork, followed by roasted beet and homemade horseradish salad over Comeback Farm Greens. The main course is Headquarters Farm roasted leg of lamb with cucumber salsa, roasted Spring Run Farm Potatoes and Sweet Valley Farm braised Corn. Dessert will be Homestead Coffee Roasters mocha mousse glace followed by a Bobolink Dairy cheese course accompanied by Phillips Farm Berries. (All courses are subject to market availability.)

Cost for the dinner is $75.00 per person and includes a choice of local red or white wine. Tax and gratuity are not included. All profits from the dinner are donated to the Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance. Last year, the dinner sold out and the Milford Oyster House was proud to donate $1500 to the HLTA. Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance is a nonprofit conservation organization working to preserve and protect the rural landscapes and natural resources of Hunterdon County. For reservations call the Milford Oyster House 908-995-9411. The Oyster House is located at 92 Water Street in Milford, NJ.

The end of July provides two farm-to-table dinners, one in Ottsville and one in Warminster.
