The Down to Earth Café

I had heard about the Down to Earth Café when they opened about 4 months ago, but never stopped in until the other day. I’m sorry that I didn’t go earlier. Located in the Glenwood Shopping Center in Perkasie, you don’t really expect to find a place to relax and get a nice bite to eat. But you’ll be pleasantly surprised once you step through the doors.

According to their Web site, their mission is to “create the most flavorful food using fresh ingredients” and “create a warm friendly place for you to enjoy our food.” They accomplish their mission on both parts.

Their menu has a wide variety of offerings: classic sandwiches and fresh salads as well as some more original items. I got very tasty fish tacos—batter fried fish with a slightly spicy cole slaw and avocado. My wife, Mary Beth, got one of their weekly specials (they have them listed on their Web site)—slow roasted chicken fajitas with black bean salsa. We split a side dish of house-made red pepper hummus.

Since we had our son, Jake, with us, we were glad to see that the Café is very kid-friendly. They have a nice assortment of kids’ dishes, all of them with a fresh fruit cup as a side dish. Jake got a hot dog. He also loved the freshly made fruit smoothie (they offer at least 5 varieties). I had one, too. For Mary Beth, the coffee lover, they offer many coffee drinks, both hot and cold.

You’ll see the phrase, “Think Local, Eat Local” around the Café and they try to live by that. When in season, they use ingredients from local farms (red peppers from Blooming Glen Farm, for example). During this time of the year, when local items aren’t available, they use organic ingredients.

The atmosphere in the Café is very relaxed—the kind of place you could just hang out for a while and get away from things. There’s a nice sitting area with comfy couches to enjoy your espresso and read the paper. (They even have small seats for the kids to relax in.) Art by local artists adorns the walls and the tables were made by a local man using old barn wood.

So far, the Down to Earth Café is a bit of a secret, but I’m pretty sure that’s going to change with time. For breakfast, lunch or just a place to relax with a yummy snack, you’ll want to “Think Local, Eat Local” again and again.
