Farmers Market Report: June 1, 2016

Oh hey, June is here. It seems like yesterday that we were talking about wanting the weather to warm up, and it seems we have gotten our wish.

I’m all about trying to “eat clean” or at least, attempt to add fresh ingredients daily to my lunches and dinners. That’s why I love going to farmers markets. There’s nothing better than a bushel of fresh fruits and veggies, especially when they’re fresh and grown locally.

I’m a young working woman, so I like my food to be healthy, but quick. One of my favorite recipe-makers is the wife/husband team Dana and John, behind the blog Minimalist Baker who love their plant-based diet. Yesterday, my boyfriend whipped up their recipe for crispy peanut tofu & cauliflower rice stir fry with bok choy. The best part about this recipe is you can find many, if not all, ingredients at farmers markets in Bucks County.

Bok Choy, Maximucks Farm Market

At the farmers markets this week add these items to your shopping cart for this great recipe.

Here’s what you will find at area farms and farmers markets, all grown in Bucks County. [Note: not every farmers market will have all these goods, but it’s a good chance you will find this produce.]

Gravity Hill Farm  is in Titusville, NJ, but if you make the trip, the market has new produce items like scallions, strawberries, sweet white turnips, and tomatoes (standard red, sungolds, heirloom, husk cherries). The market also has eggplant (three kinds) and assorted herb plants.

The Lower Makefield Farmers Market’s vendors will have cookies, coffee roasters, soaps, fresh fruits and veggies, plants, and Nina’s Waffles will be on site on Thursday from 3:30 – 6:30 pm. Vendors will also have produce items like tomatoes, garlic shoots and kohlrabi, mushrooms, chicken, pork and eggs.

The Market at DelVal has plenty of plants and expert advice on how to plant and grow your own lettuce. The Market does not have any certified organic plants, but they do carry organic seeds.

Milk House Farm Market has three different types of kale (Red Russian Kale, Tuscan Kale, and Green Kale) if you can’t get enough of the leafy green superfood. Coming soon: zucchini, red and golden beets, arugula, lettuces, sugar snap peas, sunflowers, and their new laying hens will be arriving.

Shady Brook Farm‘s PYO strawberries started on May 28, thanks to the warm weather. In addition to home-grown strawberries, the farm also has homegrown tomatoes and field grown spinach.
