Bucks Food Calendar: July 30, 2014

Yellow Watermelon from Blooming Glen Farm

“And the corn is as high as an elephant’s eye…”

Forgive me for bursting into old show tunes, but what with this gorgeous weather we’ve been having, and driving along Bucks County roads, passing corn field after corn field, I just had to.

Sweet corn, plump tomatoes and juicy peaches. Summer is really here, despite the unseasonably cool weather. I wait all year for these tomatoes, eschewing what passes for tomatoes in the supermarket the rest of the year. Whether it’s a roadside stand, your favorite farmers’ market or one of our local farm markets, go and get some.

Peaches. Stone fruits—peaches, nectarines—are ripening and beginning to come in. See our updated post on who has peaches in Bucks County here.

Weekend Food Itineraries. Wanna have some fun? If you’re into local food, here’s some ideas of what to do this weekend.

Grill at Ottsville Farmers Market

Friday. Start your weekend at the Ottsville Farmers Market. This gem of a market has a wide variety of offerings, from fresh produce, pasture-raised meat, delicious baked goods, local cheese, fresh seafood to organic, locally roasted coffee. Buy some veggies and meats, and have John Schwarz grill them for you on the stone fire pit in the middle of the market, then settle down to dinner at one of the picnic tables. The market takes place at Linden Hill Gardens, 8230 Easton Road (Rt 611) in Ottsville, from 4 to 7 pm every Friday until October 10. For more information, see their website. If you decide not to eat at the market, MOO is just up the road (on Rt 412) for a great hamburger and local vegetable dishes, followed by some ice cream at OwowCow Creamery, a half mile further up Rt 412.

On the Jersey side of the river, head over to Blue Moon Acres in Pennington for their First Friday at the Farm event. This Friday it’s an Outdoor Movie Night, beginning at 5 pm with music by Jim Arkus and food and beverage samples from the farm market. Bring your own blankets, chairs and coolers to picnic before the screening of The Farmer and the Horse, an award-winning film by local hero and Edible Jersey editor Jared Flesher. The film begins at 7:45 pm. For more information, click here.

Saturday. Start the morning at the farmers’ market of your choice: Doylestown, Wrightstown, Perkasie or Plumsteadville (click here for market details). On your way to the chicken barbecue at Sandy Ridge Farm Market, stop by the Central Bucks Senior Center to pick up some homemade cinnamon buns. The barbecue begins at 11 am and goes until 6 pm. Choices include chicken, ribs, corn on the cob and more.

To follow that lovely barbecue, drive to Peddler’s Village for a Wine and Ice Cream Social at the Chaddsford Winery Tasting Room, featuring OwowCow ice cream. The fun begins at 2 pm and costs $25 pp. Call 215.794.9655 to reserve your spot.

Still hungry? Reserve your dinner table at the cozy Lumberville General Store for their prix fixe supper club. This weekend the menu includes: choice of lentil salad or chilled cucumber soup; prime rib or baked catfish; and pine nut tart with white chocolate mousse, or seven grain bread pudding—all for only $19.95. Seatings are at 6 pm, 6:30 pm, 8 pm and 8:30 pm. Call 215.297.9262 for reservations.
