Bucks Food Calendar: September 30, 2011

Despite this spate of warm and muggy weather, it is indeed autumn. As I glance out the window, I see the leaves floating and falling, and my thoughts turn to, well, leaf blowing. No, really. I long for some cool, crisp, bright sunny autumn days. Fortunately, the forecast for this weekend looks promising. Sunny with temps in the low 60’s.

Just in time for a flurry of harvest festivals and farm-to-table dinners. Here are some of the events. For full details, including location, websites and such, see our full calendar, Food Events in Bucks County.

Harvest Festivals. You can “stomp in style” at Unionville Vineyards’ Annual Wine Harvest Festival this Saturday in Ringoes, NJ (just up Route 202). They promise you can do some stomping yourself “a la Lucy” (that’s Lucille Ball, for those of you too young to remember the episode). Or take a lovely ride up to Milford, NJ for Alba Vineyards’ Annual Grand Harvest Festival – a fundraiser – for fun activities, music, wine and food both Saturday and Sunday. Terhune Orchards in Princeton, NJ is celebrating the apple harvest all month, every weekend, with family-friendly activities, food and, of course, pick-your-own apples. Closer to home, Wycombe Vineyards is offering the opportunity to participate in the grape harvest. Last weekend it was Chamborcin grapes; this weekend it is more red grapes, probably Cabernet. Bring shears, a sun hat and your enthusiasm. They’ll provide a light lunch. For more details, see their website and call to RSVP.

Farm-to-table dinners. This whole idea of weaving our local harvest into sumptuous meals has really taken off. It’s not too late to participate in a number of great events taking place this Sunday and next. Fisherman’s Mark, the nonprofit organization and food pantry based in Lambertville will be holding a feast in the beautiful Hortulus Gardens in Wrightstown (Bucks) to celebrate their 30th anniversary. See our previous post for more details. The Milk House Farm will be laying out a farm-to-table feast provided by Soup to Nuts Catering with a farm tour beforehand on Sunday. The menu will be showcasing the farm’s Muscovy ducks and chickens. Also on Sunday is A Symphony of Flavors, the annual wine and food event to raise money for the Bucks County Symphony. This event was washed out a few weeks ago and rescheduled for this weekend. Alba Vineyards will be hosting a Harvest NJ Farm to Table Dinner with food prepared by Rats Restaurant and benefiting New Jersey Farmland Preservation, also on Sunday. Next Sunday, Zone 7, the NJ-based food distributor that gets a lot of this farm produce to local restaurant tables, is hosting a Dinner on the Farm to benefit local farmers ravaged by our recent storms. See their website for more information.

And, finally, save the date for the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance’s Farm-to-Table dinner at Earl’s Bucks County on Sunday, October 23. Details on the menu will be coming soon on their website, but it will be a seasonally-inspired, locally sourced four-course gourmet meal with wine, and lots of fun.

Fun things going on this weekend at Linden Hill Gardens, home of the Ottsville Farmers’ Market and the Kitchen Potager. At the market on Friday afternoon, José Garces’ Guapos Taco Truck will be making an appearance. The famous Philadelphia chef bought a farm and home in the Ottsville area this year to grow produce for his restaurants, and, we suspect, to get away from the city now and then to enjoy beautiful Bucks County. Saturday, the Kitchen Potager will be hosting their Potager Pizza Party with pizza made in their earthen pizza oven. For more information see their website.
