Bucks Food Calendar: October 7, 2011

It’s that time of year again. Pumpkins everywhere! And big boys too, what with all the rain we’ve had.

Milk House Farm Market is running a contest to guess the weight of “Charlie Jr.,” one of their pumpkins. See Betty Cichy’s article in this week’s Intelligencer and Courier Times on Milk House Farm. Farmer Brenda Slack is doing a stupendous job growing a wide variety of squashes and heirloom vegetables, in addition to chickens, ducks and more. The article does a good job of explaining how challenging this year’s weather has been for area farmers.

Speaking of pumpkins, our very own Shady Brook Farm in Yardley was recently listed by HalloweenAttractions.com as the 6th Best Pumpkin Patch in America. (Really. Isn’t the internet an amazing thing?) “Pumpkin Patch” being an overarching term that encompasses corn mazes, activities for children, pumpkin picking, face painting, hayrides, music, food and more. We got it all here in Bucks!

More harvest festivals this week as October gets into full swing, including River Horse Brewery’s OktoberFest celebration in Lambertville this Saturday. Check out the fun at Tabora Farm & Orchard in Chalfont, and the Ottsville Fall Festival at Linden Hill Gardens this weekend. Terhune Orchards in Princeton is celebrating the apple harvest, among other fun activities, every weekend in October. For that matter, check out local apple orchards like Snipes in Morrisville, and Solebury Orchards and Manoff Market Gardens, both in Solebury, or the apples at Del Val College in Doylestown, sold at the Market at Del Val by Shady Brook Farm. Milk House Farm is also holding a Pig Roast BYOB & Pumpkin Painting this Sunday. Details on any of these events can be found on our full calendar, Food Events in Bucks County.

There is so much going on now that we are into the cooler weather. Peruse the calendar for firehouse breakfasts – and dinners – of which there are many this weekend. A couple of interesting events caught my eye. The Lucky Cupcake Company is partnering with wine educator, Mike Conti, to do a wine and cupcake event this Thursday, October 13. You read it right. Six different Spanish wines paired with six different cupcakes, like pumpkin spice with chocolate mole truffle.

Want to know more about putting up the harvest? Join the BucksMont Organic Gardeners Club this Monday, October 10 to learn more about Food Storage & Root Cellaring. They’ll be meeting at the Churchville Nature Center at 7:15 pm.

And, finally, sign up now for the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance’s Farm-to-Table dinner at Earl’s Bucks County on Sunday, October 23. The menu will be a seasonally-inspired, locally sourced four-course gourmet meal with wine. How does this sound? Salt Roasted Beets with Warmed Goat Cheese, Candied Walnuts, Arugula and Aged Sherry Vinaigrette; Jack-o-lantern Napolean with local fall vegetables, garden herbs and pomodoro sauce; Tussock Sedge Farm braised short ribs with local heirloom carrots, locally foraged mushrooms, potato tart and shaved cauliflower; and for dessert, Snipes Farm Apple Tarte Tartin with oWowCow creamery Tahitian vanilla ice cream. The cost is $75 per person, proceeds to benefit the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance and their programs. For more information, including how and where to buy tickets, see their website. See you there!
