Well, the trees are really doing it now – looking pretty and showing their stuff. The weekend weather looks pretty too. Crisp, sunny and fall-like, perfect for all the harvest festivals going on throughout the area. In fact there are so many, everywhere I turn, that I haven’t been able to keep up on our calendar!

This weekend there are a couple of interesting things that caught my eye…everything from the One Year Anniversary Party/Supper & Jazz of the Kindle Cafe in Lambertville (Saturday evening), to the Seventh “Birthday” Party for Crossing Vineyards going on all weekend. And despite starting Weight Watchers last week, I would love to check out the Chicken Pot Pie Dinner at St. Paul’s in Sellersville (whimper, whimper)…or the Roast Beef Dinner at the Stockton Fire Company (sigh). Then there’s New Hope’s Spirit Carnivale 2010 which kicks off this weekend with the 2nd Annual Mischief March – reception at Triumph Brewing at 6 pm Friday night – costumes required, drag encouraged. I love New Hope.

To market, to market. Most of the outdoor farmers’ markets will be running through the end of October, some until the weekend before Thanksgiving. What will you find there produce-wise? Apples, cauliflower, broccoli, greens, potatoes – white and sweet, onions, garlic, winter squash, beets, radishes – that and more is still growing locally, fresh from our local farms. And pumpkins, of course. Also – local honey, baked goods, preserves, teas, eggs, pastured meat and chicken, and more. Support your local food economy and eat healthier!

Speaking of Thanksgiving…if you want a free range, local turkey, better put your order in soon with area producers. See our post from last year on who to contact for a local turkey. Click here: Gobble, gobble…where to get fresh turkeys. And if you don’t want to cook it, take a look at our post from last year on Going out for Thanksgiving. I still need to call around and get this year’s details, but it’s a pretty sure thing these restaurants will be doing it again.

Save the date. The Bucks County Foodshed Alliance will be hosting a delicious monthly meeting on November 3rd, celebrating the diversity of winter squash we have in Bucks County. At “Use Your Gourd: a Winter Squash Tasting,” Brenda Slack, fourth-generation Newtown farmer, will talk about the many varieties of edible winter squash that she grows, how they differ and how each is best prepared. She’ll also provide samples to taste and compare, and recipes. The program is open to all. It will take place on Wednesday, November 3rd at 7:30 pm at the Wrightstown Village Library. The library is at 726 Penns Park Rd., Wrightstown 18940. There is no charge, and light refreshments will be served.
