Bucks Food Calendar: October 17, 2016

The Suppers Program

Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, witches and other spirits, you have to admit late nights in October can be a little spooky. Maybe it’s the crunching of the leaves under my feet or the chilly air, but sometimes I turn around thinking there’s something behind me.

This week, there are lots of interesting foodie events, especially if you like spooky spirits (the alcoholic and haunted kind). There’s something if you like learning how to be a healthier, well-rounded foodie, and there’s even a dinner for those that want to keep up their Oktoberfest celebrations. Check out all that is in store this week, Monday through Friday, in Bucks County.

Shady Brook Farm Pumpkins

Pumpkinfest. Ready for more pumpkins? Shady Brook Farm is now open daily for Pumpkinfest until October 31. Pumpkinfest includes wagon rides to the pumpkin patch, giant pumpkin pillows, Peanuts-themed corn maze, hay maze, and other fall activities. If you get hungry while picking pumpkins, order some pumpkin ice cream from Uncle Dave’s Homemade Ice Cream. Pumpkins in the patch are sold by the pound, and tickets to Pumpkinfest are $10 on weekdays and $15 on weekends. Children under 23 months are free.

Potatoes
Cooking with fresh fall foods.

Most adults know that we should incorporate more fruits and veggies into our meals, but it’s hard to get started. With fall bringing in great seasonal produce, it should be easy to create recipes that use fresh, fall food for appetizers, side dishes, and main courses.

Learn how to make these dishes with Denis Chiappa at Carlow Cookery in Doylestown, as he instructs a fresh fall food class with the Doylestown Food Market this Monday, October 17 (today). The menu includes items like  seasonal salad with shaved vegetables, mixed squash gratin, and Caribbean stewed chicken with potatoes and vegetables. Register by calling the store at 215.489.2677. Those interested in the class can save their spot here.

Tony La Salle at Liberty Hall Pizza
Putting “art” into artisan pizza.

Artist Tony La Salle is making his second appearance as guest pizzaiolo at Liberty Hall Pizza on Tuesday, October 18. This year, he will craft two original pizzas, but he’s spicing things up by making sure part of the sales benefits a local non-profit called the
Lambertville Area Education Foundation (LAEF). La Salle’s pizza masterpieces will include: Mexican chicken mole pizza with queso fresco and fresh cilantro, and a three cheese pizza with spinach pesto and herb.

The party will continue down the hall at La Salle’s Lambertville studio next to Liberty Hall. Guests will be treated to complimentary wine and cheese while viewing new artwork on display at his gallery.

LAEF supports programs in math, science, technology, literature, and the arts in Lambertville Public School, Stockton Borough School, West Amwell Township Elementary School, and South Hunterdon Regional High School.

The Suppers Program
Wednesdays for Women.

It’s time for Hamilton’s Grill Room’s occasional series called Wednesdays for Women, where local women get together to network and enjoy a delicious meal. This Wednesday, October 19, is “What is the Suppers Program?” with Dorothy Mullen, author, counselor and TV host. Mullen created the Suppers Program and she will discuss the role nutrition plays in maintaining health of the body and mind into the kitchen. She will focus on brain health, and how to use food to avoid unnecessary cognitive losses as people age.

For reservations, email your dinner selections to judybrklyn@gmail.com. The meal includes: An appetizer of endive, apple, watercress salad, with Dijon vinaigrette; main course rotisserie roasted chicken, fines herbs or grilled Norwegian salmon, mustard glazed or grilled fall vegetables. Specters & Spirits
Specters and spirits.

Get into the Halloween spirit early with a haunted ghost tour and whiskey tasting with the Dram Devotees of Bucks County in New Hope. The group will stop at six different supernatural sites, the first five which include their own terrifying tales and complimentary whiskey pairings. The sixth stop will be at the old paper mill which now is home to Triumph Brewery. Here you can enjoy a tasty Halloween inspired cocktail.

If you didn’t know, New Hope is notoriously haunted. Each whiskey of the tour is paired with each of the six haunted sites on the tour, and each pairing will involve what may have been historically accurate or what may have been available at the time. Who knows, maybe you will see a spirit sipping whiskey alongside of you! The night begins at 6:30 pm on Thursday, October 20 at 7 West Bridge Street in New Hope.

Food
FEd Talk. At the Doylestown Mennonite Church this Thursday, you’ll learn the basics of behavioral change with Coach Kira. You’ll also learn how to apply the basics to help improve your health, by looking at cravings, comfort eating, and other factors that keep us from making changes to our food lifestyle. This event will teach you how to come away with a solid plan for changing on small behavior.

The cost of the event is $8. The Doylestown Food Market offers packages for Co-op members as well. Buy your food talk ticket here.
