Bucks Food Calendar: October 1, 2014

This week gives Bucks County residents the opportunity to taste (and learn to cook!) a huge variety of international foods. As always, the month of October brings a slew of Oktoberfests to enjoy, but there are also international cooking classes nearly every day this week, plus a special chef dinner on the menu. The harvest festivals continue rolling in, as well, so lovers of fall flavors like pumpkin and apple have plenty to sample from pumpkin beer to pumpkin ice cream.

Oktoberfests. North Wales Community Day and Oktoberfest is this Saturday, October 4. Beer and food will be served up throughout the North Wales Borough from 11:30 am until 7 pm. There’s also a pie eating contest, plus tons of activities for kids and adults alike, including a bike rodeo, live music, and swing dancing. Not recommended: trying the beer, then competing in the pie eating contest, and then trying swing dancing, in that order. Be careful out there, folks.

Triumph Oktoberfest Beers

Also on Saturday, Triumph Brewing Company in New Hope is holding their annual Oktoberfest from noon until the wee hours of Sunday morning. The brewery will be serving special menu featuring German delicacies and of course, be slinging pints of German beers all day long (their board of beers on tap is pictured above).

In keeping with the German theme, the United German Hungarians Club is hosting their Schnitzel Night TONIGHT (Wednesday, October 1) from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, and it’s German American Day at the Washington House Restaurant in Sellersville on Monday, October 6, where they’ll be serving up pork schnitzel and sauerbraten to celebrate.

International Cooking Classes. This week’s not just for German food lovers. Cooks have a chance this week to learn how to cook French, Italian, Polish and Indian foods, plus learn some essential kitchen basics. No, not at the same time.

The fun starts TONIGHmussels in red sauceT, Wednesday, October 1, with the Flavors of France Cooking Class at Carlow Cookery in Doylestown. The menu includes steak medallions with sauce au poivre and roasted mushrooms, white wine steamed mussels with tomatoes, herbs and garlic over crusty bread, and warm crepes with roasted pears and creme chantilly. Impressive.

Also tonight, Luigi DiGrazia will be divulging his family’s secret recipe for Italian Sauce at the Community School of New Hope-Solebury.

Tomorrow night, Thursday, October 2, go the Community School of NewJapanese Spring RollsHope-Solebury’s Japanese Spring Rolls (Kani Avo) Cooking Class and learn to make Japanese style Kani Avo- crab meat and avocado pan fried spring rolls and non-fried summer rolls with shrimp and mixed vegetables.

On Monday, October 6, start with the basics with a Knife Skills Cooking Class at Carlow Cookery, or treat yourself to some homemade Polish comfort food at the Pierogi Clinic Cooking Class at the Community School of New Hope-Solebury.

Tuesday, October 7, head over to the Cooking Cottage in Sellersville for their Italian Comfort Food Cooking Class and learn to make dishes like homemade spaghetti with browned butter and crispy breadcrumbs and chocolate amaretto zabaglione with spiked whipped cream, among others.

Finally, on Wednesday, October 8, take an Indian Vegetarian Cooking Class at the Community School of New Hope-Solebury taught by a native of India. You’ll learn to cook a full spectrum of Indian vegetarian staples including soups, lentils, main dishes and desserts.

Chef Dinner. The Executive Chef of Despana in Princeton has created a five course menu of Spanish Cuisine, paired with Old York Cellar’s wines, for the Wine and Paella Dinner this Sunday, October 5, at Old York Cellars. Reserve your tickets here.

More Harvest Festivals! The fall fun continues this weekend with even more Harvest festivals. Pennypack Farm & Education Center’s annual Harvest Festival is this Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm at the center in Horsham. At the festival, you’ll find vendors, delicious food, hayrides and plenty of family-friendly fun.

On Saturday and Sunday, October 4-5, Snipes Farm’s Fall HApples from Snipes Farmarvest Weekend has hayrides through their apple orchards, pumpkin picking, what they call “the land of scarecrows,” a labyrinth, face painting, pumpkin painting, and of course fresh pressed cider, pies, donuts and other fresh fall staples. Yum.

None Such Farms LogoNone Such Farms is hosting their Pumpkin Festival every weekend this October, with the traditional hay rides and pumpkin picking, but also live blue grass music, pony rides, a straw bale maze, petting zoo, and food.

To market, to market. Here’s what you can expect to find at area farm markets this week. Apples, arugula, beets, black-eye peas, broccoli, cabbage (Green, Red, Savoy), celeriac, chives, cilantro, Non-GMO sweet corn, cucumbers (Slicing & Pickling), eggplant, fennel, garlic (fresh and cured), fresh ginger, gingergrass, green beans and yellow wax beans, Tuscan and curly kale, leeks, lettuce, lettuce microgreens, lettuce mix, mint, mushrooms, okra, onions, parsley, pears, peppers (sweet, frying, poblano, hot), radishes (red, black, watermelon), potatoes, rosemary, sage, scallions, winter squash (Delicata, Butternut), tomatoes (heirloom, plum, roma), tomatillos, Swiss chard, wheat grass, and flower bouquets.

Most markets will also have: eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans. For a list of all farmers’ markets in Bucks and nearby, go to our food guide here.
