Bucks Food Calendar: November 2, 2012

What a week!

This intrepid reporter is sitting at the Corner Bakery Café in Newtown because she has no power, no internet, no running water, no nuthin’ at home. Thanks to the Café for the free WIFI, electricity and tasty food. Thanks also to the Pineville Tavern that was open for business on Tuesday morning pouring hot coffee and serving their usual good food.

I’m also providing the weekly round-up of the food calendar with one big caveat: check first before going. Many areas are still out of power or recovering so many events may not be occurring. For more details on any of these events, please go to our full calendar, Food Events in Bucks County.

The Apple Festival is the big news this weekend at Peddler’s Village. The annual event celebrates all things apple. Town Crier Bakery alone sells thousands of their apple dumplings this weekend and the whole village is geared up. Weather is supposed to be nice too (no rain!).

To market, to market. The word is that the Stockton Market will not be open this weekend. Good news is that the Wrightstown Farmers’ Market and the Doylestown Farmers’ Market will be open (Doylestown is opening at 8 am, an hour later than usual). Both of those markets are open until the weekend before Thanksgiving. Here’s what you can expect to find: spinach, apples, potatoes, garlic, onions, leeks, broccoli, cabbages, celery root, beets, turnips, lettuces, chard, collards, kale varieties, radishes, parsley, winter squash, green beans, mushrooms and freshly pressed apple cider. Markets may also have pasture-raised meats, eggs, dairy, specialty foods, and baked goods.

Looking at the week ahead there are a couple of interesting events. On Wednesday evening, November 7 the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance and Delaware Valley College will be hosting a roundtable discussion on “The American Farm from Family to Factory,” with focus on Jonathan Safran Foer’s book, Eating Animals. Local animal farmers and agriculture science professors will be on the panel. The program begins at 7 pm in the Feldman Building, Room 114, on Del Val’s campus in Doylestown. For directions click here.

Also on Wednesday, the Doylestown Food Co-op will hold their monthly mini-fundraiser at Basically Burgers and the Sweet Spot in Doylestown at 33 N Main Street, beginning at 5 pm. A portion of sales from the evening go to the Doylestown Food Co-op. To learn more about them check out their website.

Are you a fan of Pinot Noir wine? The Yardley Inn’s upcoming 10 Pinot Wine Dinner takes place on Thursday, November 8, beginning at 7 p.m. The dinner includes a fine selection of 10 Pinot Noirs and 5 courses. The dinner features a unique tasting experience as compared to previous pairings hosted at the inn. For this particular theme dinner, the food is not directly paired with the wines. The pinots are matched and served in pairs with each course in the meal. Toward the end of the event, each wine is poured once again, in a smaller serving, to allow guests to go back and compare all of the wines featured throughout the evening. “The food will play a supporting role (though I fully intend for it to be delicious) and not a starring one,” says executive chef Eben Copple. The cost to attend the Yardley Inn’s 10 Pinot Dinner is $75 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Call 215-493-3800 or visit www.yardleyinn.com to make your reservations.
