Bucks Food Calendar: May 31, 2013

Heat wave at the beginning of June?? Well, the strawberries should like it. Stay cool.

Lima_eggsSummer farm tours begin. Every summer the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance, a non-profit working to to foster and expand a local, sustainable food supply in Bucks County, hosts a series of farm tours every month through September. They are a lot of fun. You get to go to a local farm, learn about what they do and eat some really good food. The evening begins with a potluck and the farm tour follows. The series begins this Wednesday, June 5 at Lima Family Farms in Hillsborough, NJ. Kathy and John Lima raise grass-fed beef, chickens, pasture-raised pork, and have eggs and vegetables in season. The potluck begins at 6 pm and the tour at 7 pm. Bring your own utensils and plates, and seating. For more information, see the Food Events Calendar or go to the Foodshed’s website. Upcoming tours will be at Flint Hill Farm (Saturday, July 13), Villa Milagro Vineyards (Wednesday, August 7) and Roots to River Farm (Wednesday, September 4).

Farm Fresh_EggCartonFarm Fresh Film Series at the County Theater. Come out this Thursday, June 6 for a viewing of the movie, Locavore, a documentary about returning to a locally sourced diet. The Doylestown Food Co-op and the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance are co-sponsoring the event with a panel discussion to follow. Doors open at 7 pm and the film begins at 7:30 pm. (Yours truly will be there as part of the panel!). See more information here.

Farmers Markets. Welcome to the Frenchtown Farmers’ Market, a brand new market, opening this Sunday, June 2 and continuing every Sunday through October 27, from 10 am to 2 pm. They will have over 14 vendors bringing fresh produce from six different farms, fruit, cheese and bread from Hoboken Farms, olive oil, grass-fed meats from Lima Family Farms, nuts and seeds, mushrooms and more.

This week will see four more farmers’ markets opening for the season: Langhorne (Tuesday afternoon), The Farmers’ Market @ Playwicki Farm (Wednesday afternoon), Lower Makefield (Thursday afternoon) and Plumsteadville (Saturday morning). For a list of all Bucks County farmers’ markets, see our post here.
