Bucks Food Calendar: May 24, 2013

Umbrella drinkSummer officially starts this weekend. And you can start wearing white too (am I dating myself?). The weather is a little iffy – well, actually it’s pouring today with showers in the forecast tomorrow – but Sunday and Monday look lovely. Have an umbrella drink anyway.

Looking to open up the grill on Memorial Day? Check out our post, Where’s the beef? And pork, and lamb, and chicken. It lists all the butchers, farms and stores where you can buy great meat in Bucks County. Go get a couple of steaks.

Just picked strawberriesBut the big news this week is strawberries! Yesiree, they are starting to appear at area farms (that’s if the rain doesn’t do them in). Milk House Farm Market in Newtown definitely has them. They should start showing up at other markets too. Interested in pick-your-own? See our post, Pick-your-own strawberries in Bucks for a list of farms that invite you into the fields to pick. There is nothing like eating a warm strawberry right off the bush. Oh my. You’ll never buy those awful California strawberries again.

Farmers Markets. This week and next will see four more farmers’ markets opening for the season: Langhorne, The Farmers’ Market @ Playwicki Farm, Lower Makefield and Plumsteadville. This past Tuesday I published a list of all Bucks County farmers’ markets, as well as year-round markets and farmers’ markets in nearby New Jersey. Read the post here.

What can you expect to find at most farmers markets this week? Hopefully, strawberries, Romaine lettuce, spring lettuces, rosemary, thyme, chives, oregano, arugula and sorrel, asparagus, tender broccoli rabe, dandelion greens, Tuscan and Red Russian kale, lettuce, radishes, spinach, stinging nettles, tatsoi, bok choi, collards, spring onions, beets, fiddle heads, ramps, snow peas, green garlic, Swiss chard, French chard, rhubarb, endive and escarole.

Many markets will have fresh, hormone and antibiotic-free, pasture-raised chicken, turkey, pork and 100% grass-fed beef, and pasture-raised, free range eggs. Look also for cow and goat milk cheeses, smoothies, yogurt, and milk; foraged wild mushrooms and cultivated mushrooms, and prepared foods like dill pickles, sauces, fruit butters, gluten free and vegan products, olive oil, and humus. Artisanal breads and baked goods, including gluten free, are at several markets and you may find organic maple syrup, as well as fair trade, organic, locally roasted coffee.

Looking ahead. Friday Night Fireworks is officially supposed to start tonight in New Hope, but I think the rain will nix that. Hopefully next Friday night will be fair.

Next Saturday June 1st is the Annual Lobsterfest at Trinity Episcopal Church in Solebury. Yes, fresh lobster in Bucks County. For $30 per person, you can eat under the tents or take home a luscious 1 1/4 pound lobster dinner or 1/2 rack of smoked organic pork ribs, both include: beverage, corn on the cob, cole slaw and roll. There is homemade clam chowder as well as hamburgers, veggie burgers, hotdogs and other carnival foods. The homemade dessert table – provided by church members – is wonderful.

memorialdayLast but not least, remember that Memorial Day is supposed to be about honoring our American brothers and sisters who have served for our country. Thank a veteran if you can.
