Bucks Food Calendar: June 7, 2013

strawberries in rainI know I have a tendency to begin the weekly calendar post with a weather report, but, geez, this is some rain. I’m guessing there are a number of Friday night and Saturday activities that may be impacted by this deluge. Likely casualties – Friday Night Fireworks in New Hope/Lambertville, and rather wet First Fridays in Doylestown and Perkasie. But not to worry, there’s plenty of things to do indoors this weekend too.

On Saturday, we’re looking forward – rain or not – to the 2013 Bucks County Fire Chief’s and Fireman’s Association Parade, happening this year in Wycombe to honor our local firehouse, Lingohocken Fire Co., celebrating its 100th Anniversary. Pretty cool. Parade begins at noon in Pineville, proceeds down Township Line into Wycombe, swings past the firehouse, then goes onto the Middletown Grange Fair Grounds on Penns Park Road. If you are going to the Wrightstown Farmers’ Market, you may want to take Swamp Road.

Shady Brook Farm is also celebrating their 100th Anniversary. From 4 pm to 10 pm on Saturday there will be rides, entertainment, food vendors and, hopefully, fireworks at 9:30 pm. Rain date is next Saturday, June 15. Check their website for more information.

summerfest-nodate2If you’re a beer afictionado, you already know that this past week has been Philly Beer Week. Local restaurants are celebrating too.  Friday evening, The Washington House in Sellersville is hosting a beer tasting of “Philly Beer Week Favorites.” And Issac Newton’s in Newtown has a special Sierra Nevada Luncheon planned for Saturday from 12 pm to 2:30 pm including Sierra’s Summerfest, Belgian Blonde IPA, Hoptimum Imperial IPA and Oliva Abbey Saison (paired with mandarin oranges) and a 3 course meal ($40).

Farmers’ Markets. What can you expect to find at local farmers’ markets this week? New on the scene will be garlic scapes (the above ground part of the garlic bulb) beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, new potatoes, snap beans, snow peas, and summer squash. garlic scapesHopefully there will still be asparagus, ramps, and rhubarb. Of course, there should still be ample strawberries (although they don’t like all this wet weather; get ’em while you can), lots of spring greens (kale, chard, collards, tatsoi, bok choy, spinach, lettuce, arugula, escarole, dandelion greens), fennel, garlic, green onions, herbs, kohlrabi, leeks, mushrooms, radishes, scallions, turnips, garlic chives, and broccoli rabe.

Look also for pasture-raised pork, chicken, and beef, as well as eggs and cheeses. Many markets have fresh breads and baked goods, and other delicacies. The Wrightstown Market will have the Bonjour Creperie truck again this week as well as the 4th Street Foodworks Organic Kettle Corn, which makes non-GMO, organic popcorn right there at the market. At Ottsville, find Metropolitan Seafood, Blue Mountain Vineyards as well as lots of other interesting vendors. For a list of all local farmers’ markets, see our post from last month, Local Farmers’ Markets 2013.

What Exit WineComing up. On June 20, Old York Cellars in Ringoes is having a Virtual Wine Tasting. That caught my eye. You can enjoy the event at the winery, or order wine and comestibles to enjoy at home while the event takes place, participating online. It’s all to launch their What Exit Wine (a la New Jersey). See their website for more details.

Pennsbury Manor will be hosting Brews & Bites, where you will be able to stroll around the picturesque 43-acres of William Penn’s 17th century country estate and enjoy the tastings of local beer and food by JustFood. For more details see their website.

Don’t forget too that next – yes, next – Sunday is Father’s Day.
