Bucks Food Calendar: June 28, 2013

Adirondack chairs_cropAh the lazy hot days of summer. Hello July.

It may seem that things are slowing down with the July 4th holiday approaching and folks escaping to wherever they go (Shore? Mountains? Backyard?), but Bucks County is bursting with fresh veggies and fruit, cool wines, delicious ice cream and local cheese.

Grilling for the Fourth. If you’re looking to grill for the holiday, Bucks County has it all. If you are a carnivore, see our post about where to buy meats in Bucks (Where’s the beef? And pork, and lamb, and chicken…). Don’t forget our local farmers’ markets that usually have local grass-fed and pasture-raised meats too. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, well, you couldn’t ask for more beautiful vegetables, herbs and fruits to throw on the grill or in your dishes. Open to some grilling tips and some interesting marinades? See Rich Baringer’s post, Grilling it up for the Fourth.

EggplantTo market, to market. New arrivals this week! Look for lovely basil, eggplant, cucumbers, radicchio, raspberries and blueberries (and maybe cherries). There might even be some cherry tomatoes. You’ll also (probably) find at area farmers’ markets: arugula, beets, bok choi, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, collard greens, fennel, garlic, garlic scapes, green beans, green onions, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce varieties, mushrooms, new potatoes, radishes, scallions, snap peas, snow peas, spinach, strawberries (maybe), summer squash, Swiss chard, turnips, zucchini and and I’m sure a few things I’ve missed. You’ll also find eggs from pasture-raised chickens, baked goods, pasture-raised beef and pork, cheese, yogurt and lots more. See our listing of area farmers’ markets for the one near you.

Onto to wine. One of the most pleasant things to do this time of year is to visit one of the area wineries, sit back and sip a nice glass of wine, in the shade preferably, with a nice breeze (well, I can dream, can’t I?).

wineAt Old York Cellars in Ringoes they celebrate the summery wine drink, sangria, all summer long, every weekend. Phillips Fine Wines in Stockton holds wine tastings every Saturday. This week it will be three lovely whites from around the globe. Stop by the Chaddsford Winery Tasting Room in Peddler’s Village on Saturday, 2 pm, for a Wine & Ice Cream Social, featuring OwowCow Creamery and Chaddsford wines. What could be bad? RSVP is required, cost is $20 per person. (BTW, Chaddsford also has Sangria Weekends every July weekend.)

Sit outside and listen to music while you sip at Shady Brook Farms in Yardley and the Market at Del Val on Friday evenings at their Wine Concert Series all summer long. And tune into more music at Crossing Vineyards on most Friday evenings during the summer.

Shepard-Valley_Reading-TermOnto to cheese. Stop by the Tubby Olive in Newtown as they highlight cheeses from Valley Shepherd Creamery, a 120 acre sheep, goat and cow farm and artisanal cheese making operation located in Long Valley, N.J. The cheese tasting and presentation will be on Sunday, June 30th, from 12 pm – 2 pm. Enjoy samplings of a variety of cheeses paired with white and dark balsamics. Learn all about Valley Shepherd and the cheese making process from Reading Terminal Market retail manager and cheese expert Zeke Ferguson. I’ve had their cheese in several markets, including the Reading Terminal, and it is very good.
