Bucks Food Calendar: June 21, 2013

Raspberries_Penn VermontThe word for this weekend? Berries. Strawberries are finishing up in Lower and Central Bucks but there are still plenty in Upper Bucks for another week or two. You can pick-your-own at Penn-Vermont Fruit Farm in Bedminster. They also have raspberries! Scott Guiser from the Penn State Cooperative Extension also told me that Penn-Vermont is one of the only places in Bucks you can get black raspberries and it is a short season. Tune into Penn-Vermont’s Facebook page for updates. Manoff’s Market Gardens in Solebury had the last of their strawberries when I stopped by this week, but said they would probably have raspberries and sweet cherries this weekend. Check their website or give them a call to check before going. They also have pick-your-own. For a full listing of where you can pick-your-own berries in Bucks County, see our previous post.

Summer solstice at SnipesSnipes Farm & Educational Center will be hosting their Summer Solstice Celebration on Saturday, June 22 from 6 – 10 pm. There will be bonfires, roasts, live music and rides. All proceeds benefit their Send-a-Kid-to-Camp Campaign. Suggested donation is $25 for adults and $10 for kids. For more information, see their website.

Join the Doylestown Food Co-op on Wednesdays this summer on the campus of Delaware Valley College at the Hope of the Harvest Charitable Garden. Produce from the garden goes straight to local food pantries overseen by the Bucks County Opportunity Council (BCOC). They need at least ten volunteers each week from May into September to help planting, weeding and harvesting.

If you’re interested in helping out local food pantries get fresh local food, you can also volunteer with Rolling Harvest Food Rescue this summer. This great organization picks up donated produce from 18 area farms and delivers to over two dozen hunger relief organizations in Bucks and nearby. You can help deliver, or glean produce from the fields. Contact them for more information.

Bobolink farm house cheeseTidbits. Bowman’s Tavern’s new owners, James Seward and chef Michael Livelsberger, have put their touches on a new menu at Bowman’s. Gone are some of the “fried” and here are more fresh, and smoked stuff. I did an interview with them recently. Look for my article soon. See the new menu here.

Fan of great, artisanal cheese? Then you’ll be happy to know that Bobolink Dairy & Bakehouse north of Frenchtown now has a Facebook page with regular updates of which cheeses are ready and where you can find them (like the Stockton Market). Very good cheese.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATo market, to market. You’ll find at area farmers’ markets: arugula, asparagus (maybe), beets, bok choi, broccoli, broccoli rabe, cabbage, carrots, collard greens, fennel, garlic, garlic scapes, green beans, green onions, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce varieties, mushrooms, new potatoes, radishes, rhubarb, scallions, snap peas, snow peas, spinach, strawberries (maybe), summer squash, Swiss chard, turnips, watercress, zucchini and and I’m sure a few things I’ve missed. You’ll also find eggs from pasture-raised chickens, baked goods, pasture-raised beef and pork, cheese, yogurt and lots more. See our listing of area farmers’ markets for the one near you.
