Bucks Food Calendar: July 5, 2013

Blueberries from Shady Brook FarmBlueberries!

Local blueberries are popping up every where and we all want to celebrate. At Terhune Orchards in Princeton this weekend, join them for their annual Blueberry Bash. Pick your own blueberries, enjoy some country music, rides for the kids, a Blueberry Bake-Off (judged by Susan Yeske, from the Bucks County Herald and the Trenton Times) and a Blueberry Bash “Buffet,” with lots of tasty blueberry treats–Blueberry-Apple Crisp, Blueberry drinks, Blueberry Muffins, Blueberry Cobbler, Blueberry jam, and Blueberry Salsa. The event runs all day Saturday and Sunday, from 10 am to 5 pm.

Greenstraw Smoothies, the juice bar and smoothie shop in Newtown, is celebrating the blueberry with their new smoothie, Local Honey Blue Blue. Made from organic blueberries from Little Buck Farms, cucumbers from Uncle Bill’s Farm, Seven Stars Farm organic yogurt, Bob’s Buzzy Bees raw honey, organic apple juice, bananas and ice, it’s sure to quench your thirst.

OwowCow Creamery will be at the Tubby Olive this Saturday for a unique tasting event. The specialty olive oil and balsamic vinegar (and other gourmet items) store in Newtown will have OwowCow’s ice cream with balsamic and oils available for drizzling Saturday afternoon from 1 – 3 pm. Saturday evening they will also host a Summer Dessert Night with sample desserts made with their products, along with live music and a raffle.

What Exit WineMake fun of New Jersey if you like, but Old York Cellars in Ringoes is celebrating the Garden State this weekend with the release of their What Exit Wines. Come to the winery, get your own personalized label on the wine of your choice and help the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund ($1 from each bottle goes to the charity). There will be food, music, games and more. A $5 donation will be required at the door and guests will receive a wine tasting and souvenir glass. For more information, see their website.

New potatoes from Blooming Glen FarmTo market, to market. New arrivals this week! Look for fresh spring onions, including heirloom torpedo onions, cucumbers, red and green cabbage, parsley and (maybe) raspberries and sweet corn (!). There might even be some cherry tomatoes. You’ll also (probably) find at area farmers’ markets: arugula, beets, broccoli, carrots, garlic, garlic scapes, green beans, green onions, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce varieties, mushrooms, new potatoes, radishes, scallions, snap peas, snow peas, spinach, summer squash, Swiss chard, turnips, zucchini and and I’m sure a few things I’ve missed. You’ll also find eggs from pasture-raised chickens, baked goods, pasture-raised beef and pork, cheese, yogurt and lots more. See our listing of area farmers’ markets for the one near you.

Flint Hill baby goatsCome to the Wrightstown Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning for Dairy Day. Bring the kids – and adults – because you’ll be able to pet baby dairy goats and a calf, build a giant sundae with the Bucks County Dairy Princess Nicole Ender (10:30 am), make butter and enjoy local cheeses and dairy. The market begins at 9 am and continues until 1 pm at 2203 Second Street Pike in Wrightstown (just north of Newtown).
