Bucks Food Calendar: July 31, 2017

Ah, the lazy days of summer. As we drift into August this week (with some nice weather!), make sure you take the time to enjoy Bucks County and all its food delights. Go sip a summery drink by the river, take advantage of a local restaurant’s weekday specials and stock up with the gorgeous summer produce from our local farms.

Farm Tour at Bedminster Orchard. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is visit local farms with the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance’s Farm Tour Series. This Wednesday come to a potluck and tour at Bedminster Orchard in Perkasie.

This fairly new farm, begun in 2007, grows 23 apple varieties, 24 peach varieties (white and yellow) and 4 kinds of nectarines. They also produce tomatoes, watermelons, cantaloupes, strawberries and raspberries and sell their own fresh made apple cider and apple sauce.

The evening’s potluck meal runs from 6 – 7 pm, with the tour to follow. Visitors are expected to bring a dish to share with others and their family’s own eating equipment, beverages and seating (and please carry out your own trash). Please wear appropriate footwear for the farm. Any weather cancellations will be posted on the BCFA website and Facebook page, but you can call 215.621.8967 for more information.

Farmers market fun. August is here, and that means farmers markets will soon be bursting with more fresh produce like corn, cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatillos, tomatoes, and peaches. Don’t miss out on a great season for fruits and veggies; we have a helpful guide where you’ll find farmers markets near you and all around Bucks County (and nearby).

Of course, there are plenty of weekend farmers markets, but don’t forget to check the ones that are open Monday through Thursday! On Thursdays, you can visit the Lower Makefield Farmers Market, or The Farmers Market @ Playwicki Farm on Wednesdays.

Corn, corn, corn! My sister, who lives in England, gets so jealous of us this time of year because she misses sweet corn. Here are a few of my favorite recipes for capturing the best of Bucks County corn: Macque Choux (think Cajun creamed corn) and Mexican Style Grilled Corn.

Summertime and the living’s easy. Whether you’re looking for a drink to unwind or you want to leisurely enjoy a dinner, riverside restaurants in and around Bucks County should be your destination.

Here are some restaurants along the Delaware if you’re looking for a good meal, a cold drink, and a beautiful view.

On the radar…

  • Karlton Cafe: Exciting news from the Karlton Cafe; beginning this September, they will be serving dinner Friday and Saturday nights. More details to come.
  • Clam Bake: The Lumberville General Store is holding a clambake on Sunday, August 13 from 3:30 – 7 pm. Cost for adults is $19.95 and for kids $9.95, and it’s BYOB. Click here for the menu.
