Bucks Food Calendar: July 27, 2012

You know it’s summer when…fill in the blank. For me it’s peaches, tomatoes and sweet corn. So we’re in the thick of it now.

Local peaches can be found at Solebury Orchards, Manoff Market Gardens and Fairview Farm. Solebury Orchards also still has some blueberries (but it was a lighter than usual crop this year), blackberries and apricots (also going soon) and early pears. Manoff’s has white and yellow peaches, and blackberries, with yellow nectarines coming soon. I’m just happy I live around the corner from Fairview Farm and their freestone yellow peaches. Yum.

Tomatoes and sweet corn are showing up in farmers’ markets and farm stands all over the county, but I’m still waiting for my favorite tomatoes from Fred & Evelyn Slack’s farm in Forest Grove (see the post we wrote about them here).

This week will be the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance’s third summer farm tour and potluck. The event takes place Wednesday, August 1st at the Myerov Family Farm in Perkasie. In addition to a delicious potluck and a tour of the farm, there will also be a piano concert! The Myerov Farm is a CSA but also has their own market. Bring a dish to share, eating utensils, and seating for your family. The potluck begins at 6 pm, tour and concert to follow at 7 pm. For more information, click here.

To market, to market. What can you expect to find at area farmers’ markets this week? Sweet corn, berries, peaches, pears, melons, heirloom tomatoes, green beans, okra, sunflowers and bouquets, potatoes, basil, eggplant, fennel, fresh garlic, spring onions, scallions, cucumbers, cabbages, patty pan squash, zucchini, yellow squash, red beets, turnips, kohlrabi, lettuces, chard, broccoli, collards, radishes, mushrooms, dill, parsley, cilantro and other herbs. Many markets will also have pasture-raised meats, free range eggs, baked goods, specialty food items and more. For a full listing of farmers’ markets in Bucks County, click here.
