Bucks Food Calendar: July 23, 2014

Just when I think things are slowing down for the summer, I look at Bucks County Taste’s Food Events Calendar and find a whole bunch of fun things going on locally.

Homemade cinnamon buns made by your (surrogate) grandmother. On the last week of every month, the Central Bucks Senior Center holds a cinnamon bun bake sale. Fresh, gooey, chewy buns, made that morning, are sold by the dozen in three flavors: plain ($5), raisin ($5.50) and raisin and nuts ($6.50). This week the sale begins on Tuesday, July 29 and continues through Saturday, August 2, every day from 9 am to 3 pm.

Volunteers from the center start the process at midnight the day of the sale, mixing the dough and rolling it out. As the morning progresses, they are joined by the “goopers,” “bakers,” “dumpers,” and “wrappers,” who all perform their essential function so that you can bite into a lovely sticky bun with your coffee. They make between 120 to 150 dozen buns a day! Stop by the center at 700 Shady Retreat Road in Doylestown (near intersection of Shady Retreat and Broad St.). For more information, call 215.348.0565.

Soul foodThe Second Baptist Church of Doylestown presents its Annual Soul Food Take-Out Dinner this Friday, July 25. For only $10 per dinner, you can get fried fish or chicken wings, and two sides, including collard greens, mac n’cheese, potato salad or green beans. Homemade pound cake comes with. Place your order before 4:30 pm by calling 215.766.7650. See their website for the order form.

This is a great time of year for farm-to-table dinners. Local chefs are intoxicated by the freshness of the local produce and are having a good time creating mouth-watering dinners. In Lambertville, Brian’s is cooking up the Great American Summer Food Feast, a prix fixe dinner including Lobster & Corn Chowder, Fried Oysters with Tartar & Vegetable Pickles, Native American Style Cedar Plank Salmon, Duck Meatloaf and Local Blueberry Cobbler. The dinner takes place on Monday, July 28 and costs $75 per person. Contact them for reservations at 609.460.4148.

Matts_Red_RoosterCan you handle a delicious surprise? Then reserve your table at Matt’s Red Rooster Grill in Flemington this Wednesday, July 30Matt’s Left Handed Tasting Dinner will feature a five course tasting, using local produce and quality meats and seafood. No menu will be released in advance, so prepare to be surprised. (Not recommended for those with food allergies or strong dislikes because every dish will be unexpected.) The prix fixe dinner is $85 per person. You can contact them at 908.788.7050.

MOO burger and beerEvery Friday evening this summer, Bucks County Brewery and Hewn Spirits invite you to hang out, drink some locally produced adult beverages and partake of food from a different food truck every week. This Friday, it’s Beer, Burgers and Cookies, with the MOO Truck bringing their delicious burgers and Bucks County’s newest cookie company, Nomoo, selling their dairy-free, kosher cookies for dessert. John Richards will be providing music too. The fun starts at 5 pm.

Healthy Grocery Shopping Tour. It can be confusing to eat healthy these days. Join Crystal Connor, CHHC, this Wednesday, July 30, at the Giant Supermarket in Doylestown to learn how to read food labels, receive nutritional information, and taste foods. Learn what the terms “organic,” “conventional,” and “GMO” mean, the FAT facts on meat and dairy, and about local foods and CSAs. The cost is $25 per person and you can contact the The Bucks County Wellness Centre at 215.345.1445 to reserve your spot.
