Bucks Food Calendar: July 12, 2013

Sun and rain cloudsThe weather looks interesting this weekend, one of those 30% or 40% chance of thunderstorms kind of thing (why can’t the weather service commit??). Which basically means make your weekend plans in spite of the vague weather report but be prepared. But don’t stay inside. There are too many fun things going on this weekend.

The 64th Annual Tinicum Arts Festival is coming up this weekend, Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14. The show is well known as the premier showcase for the best in arts, crafts, music and literature that Bucks County has to offer. The centerpiece of the Festival is the Art Barn, where a judged exhibit of the works of nearly 200 regional artists will be on display and for sale. The Art Barn will be surrounded by more than 125 booths filled with the hand-made creations of a variety of artisans.

And let’s not forget about the food. Whether you prefer sweet or savory crepes, funnel cake, fresh-squeezed lemonade, ice cream, old fashioned Kettle Korn or serious Italian sausage sandwiches, Black Angus cheeseburgers or Old Bay shrimp you’ll find something to indulge in.

The Tinicum Arts Festival is the primary fundraiser for the Tinicum Civic Association, which owns and maintains the 180-year old Stover Mill and donates to over 30 local non-profit organizations that serve the Delaware River Valley community.

http://www.peddlersvillage.com/!userfiles/images/BGBB2013-web.jpgBlueberries are the center of attention this weekend at Peddler’s Village as they hold their first Bluegrass and Blueberries Festival. There will be ALL kinds of delightful blueberry treats, great music and dancing. Just for example, Town Crier Bakery will be making Blueberry Pies, Blueberry Muffins, Blueberry Pull-A-Part Bread and Blueberry Tarts. Or you can get Blueberry Fudge, Chocolate Blueberry Clusters and Old Fashioned Blueberry Soda at Skip’s Candy Corner. And Blueberry Bruschetta and Blueberry Balsamic over Fresh Mozzarella at Casa Casale. Yum. For more information, see their website.

A berry, berry good time to pick berries. A real joy this time of year is picking your own blueberries and raspberries – and popping one or two into your mouth, still warm from the sun. I heard from Susan Snipes-Wells, of Snipes Farm and Education Center in Raspberries_Penn VermontMorrisville, that they can’t pick the blueberries fast enough. You can pick-your-own there or at Solebury Orchards and Shady Brook Farm. Check their websites for up to date information on what is coming in and what is available for pick-your-own. There are also many farms where you can pick-your-own raspberries. See our previous post on where to go.

Manoff Market Gardens in Solebury has raspberries, sweet cherries and the first yellow peaches! Their Sugar May white peach should be ready for this weekend. Look for their Annual Peach Festival on Saturday, August 10. Also, for some of the best peaches in Bucks County, stop by Fairview Farm in Pineville. They say they will have peaches mid-to-late next week.

To market, to market. New arrivals this week! Tomatoes are beginning to show up, corn made its first appearance last week and maybe we’ll even see peaches this week. What else might you see at area farmers’ markets? Apricots, arugula, beets, blackberries, Heirloom tomatoes; photo by L. Goldmanblueberries, broccoli rabe, cabbage, cantaloupes, carrots, celery, collard greens, cucumbers, eggplant, fennel, garlic, herbs, kale, leeks, head lettuce, beans, mustard greens, variety of onions, pea tops, peaches, peppers, potatoes, radicchio, radishes, ramps, raspberries, romaine, salad mix, scallions, squash, string beans, sweet corn, Swiss chard, tomatoes, turnips and zucchini.

You’ll also find eggs from pasture-raised chickens, baked goods, pasture-raised beef and pork, cheese, yogurt and lots more. See our listing of area farmers’ markets for the one near you.
