Bucks Food Calendar: January 9, 2016

Doylestown Brewing Co. cheeseburger with bacon

After our snowy weekend, are you ready to venture out? Just because it’s the middle of winter, doesn’t mean our local food choices have diminished. That’s the beauty of living in the Delaware River Valley.

This week, try a new restaurant (or a new half-priced burger), luxuriate in a wine tasting dinner, and indulge in rich, tummy warming foods. Or, if your holidays left you with some diet resolutions, attend a detox workshop and start the New Year eating healthy.

Detox SoupEssential oils 101. Every month in 2017, Organnon’s Market will host an essential oils workshop, where you can smell eleven of their “everyday oils.” Come this Monday evening (tonight) and experience the diffuser, ask questions, and even get yourself a starter kit for oils. These classes fill up every time, so please come a few minutes early to get a seat. Questions prior to the event can be emailed to danielle@organnons.com or RSVP here.

More at Organnon’s…This Tuesday, January 10 from 12 – 1:30 pm, Organnon’s hosts a free “lunch and learn:” “Detoxification for a New Year.” Join Cathy Windland, Inner Spa owner and national board certified colon hydro therapist as she teaches about optimal wellness for 2017. Please call 215.968.9000 to RSVP. Also, while you are there, pick up some yummy detox soup from Doc Bakers Farmulations in Doylestown. The soups contain wholesome ingredients like lentils, onion, garlic, and kale.

Wine tasting dinner at Washington House

Wine tasting dinner: Chairman’s Selections. The Washington House restaurant begins the new year with a wine tasting dinner hosted by their very own Elayne Brick on Tuesday, January 10. Ten wines will be paired perfectly with a five-course dinner for $59 per person. The wine dinners fill up quickly, so reserve your spot by calling 215.257.3000 (online reservations not accepted for this event).

Guest pizzaiolo at Liberty Hall Pizza. Liberty Hall Pizza hosts its first Guest Pizzaiolo evening of 2017 this Tuesday, January 10 at 5 pm. Publicist Peter Breslow will take over the pizza oven and create a “spicy Gabagool,” a tribute to the Philadelphia Italian hoagies and pizza from his childhood.

The pizza features spicy capicola, Pecorino cheese and tomato sauce, finished with a spicy Thai honey drizzle. His other addition to Liberty Hall’s menu will be the “Steakhouse White” pizza, consisting of sliced New York strip steak, local mushrooms, sharp provolone, a horseradish beurre blanc, topped with long hots.

In Winter's KitchenFood for Thought book club. If you think winters are cold here, consider Minnesota, where author Beth Dooley spent time learning about the local food movement. This month’s choice at the Food for Thought book club is Dooley’s book, In Winter’s Kitchen: Growing Roots and Breaking Bread in the Northern Heartland.

The book demonstrates that even in the short growing season, local food can be organic, healthy, and community-based. Also, it can be just plain delicious. Learn more about the book here.

The Food for Thought book club meets the second Tuesday of the month at the Doylestown Food Market. Meet and greet other community members at 6:15 pm, followed by the discussion which begins at 6:30 pm. Feel free to bring an optional snack to share.

Burger, Doylestown Brewing Company

Half-priced burgers. Hump day just got better. The Hops Bar and Grill in Doylestown now offers half-priced burgers from 11 am – 9 pm on Wednesdays, for dine-in only.
