Bucks Food Calendar: January 7, 2015

It’s fairly calm (and cold) on the Bucks County front this first week of 2015. Special one-time events will kick into high gear next week and the next few months are going to play host to some very exciting stuff, so keep your eyes peeled! Don’t worry about what to do this weekend, though, because there are still a lot of fun, ongoing things happening in the food world.

First, try the Happy Hour Raw Bar on Thursday night or Friday night any week from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at DeAnna’s Restaurant in Lambertville, NJ. Take advantage of $1 clams, oysters, and shrimp, and pair them up with a Martini. The taste of the ocean and the warm atmosphere of DeAnna’s bar will take you far, far away from this icy arctic weather.

Spaghetti and Tomato SauceNext, gather the family to head to the Delaware Valley Fire Company Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, January 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The dinner happens once a month and is an affordable alternative to schlepping the kids to a restaurant after a busy week.

Or if you want to hit the town adults-only, check out Hopewell Valley Vineyard’s Music, Pizza & Merlot. Every Friday and Saturday night from 6 pm to 9 pm, they serve up hot Brick Oven Pizza, Merlot, and live music. This Friday, January 9, Pocketful of Soul will be playing some soul tunes, and on Saturday, January 10, Acoustic Road will throwing down some classic rock.

On Sunday, January 11, Upper Black Eddy Fire Company is back with their Firehouse BreakfastRiegelsville Fire Company breakfast of pancakes, french toast, cream dried beef, eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, and toast. Doors are open from 7:30 am to noon.

If you’re on the Downton Abbey bandwagon, this one’s for you. Head to the Holly Hedge Estate in New Hope for a Downton Abbey-themed Afternoon Tea on Sunday, January 11, from 2 to 4 pm. The tea celebrates the dawning of the 5th season of the popular period drama and proceeds benefit the Friends of the New Hope Solebury Library. Period costume is encouraged, but not required.

Duck Soup is a local favorite, nestled within the Logan Square Shopping Center in New Hope. Their omelets are always amazing and I am willing to claim that they serve one of the best lunches in the area Apple-Strudel(we’re talking soup made from scratch, fresh baguettes, delicately dressed salads, vegetables roastedto perfection). Jim Hamilton of Hamilton’s Grill Room must know this, too, because he’s invited Duck Soup owner and chef Carla Fuentes to take the spotlight at the next Jim Hamilton’s Atelier Cooking Class at Hamilton’s Grill Room on Tuesday, January 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. She’ll be cooking two types of omelets, her famous apple strudel, an endive salad, and other dishes. Complimentary wine is part of the package, too.

To market, to market. The Wrightstown Winter Market takes place on the second and fourth Saturday of every month through April. The New Hope Indoor Farmers Market happens Thursdays throughout the winter season at the Event Center by Cornerstone (formerly the Eagle Fire Hall) and the Princeton Winter Market occurs once monthly (next date: January 15). In Flemington, the Hunterdon Land Trust’s Winter Farmers’ Market returns Sunday, January 18 from 11 am to 1 pm with 14 farmers and vendors. It takes place at the Dvoor Farm, off the Route 12 circle. The market will be held the third Sunday of every month. The Stockton Farmers Market, the Stangl Factory Farmers Market and the Quakertown Farmers Market are open year round.

Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets:  Apples (Keepsake, Braeburn, Fuji, Gold Rush, Pink Lady, Stayman Winesap), beets, butternut squash, carrots, celeriac (celery root), cheese pumpkins, collard greens, herbs, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, micro-greens, mushrooms, napa cabbage, onions, potatoes, rutabaga, salad greens, strawberries (frozen), sweet potatoes, swiss chard, tatsoi, turnips, watermelon radishes, and wheatgrass.

Most markets will also have eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, cider and juice, sauces locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans.
