Bucks Food Calendar: August 9, 2013

BASILBasil is in abundance this year. I’m reminded every time I walk by my herb garden. “Got to do something with it,” I mumble to myself. And then I forget.

Listening to the radio in the car yesterday I heard a piece about basil pesto. If you are an afictionado of this pasta staple, you know that you are supposed to use pine nuts. But have you seen the price of pine nuts lately? According to the story on NPR, they are now going for $60 to $120 per lb. And you’re also supposed to shy away from any but Italian pine nuts due to recent scares and just plain bad-tasting pine nuts from other countries (or is this a conspiracy cooked up by the Italian agriculture ministry?)

Pistachio Pesto; photo Nathan Hoy, for Julia CroceBut all hope is not lost. Many people are experimenting with use of other nuts (or none at all). In yesterday’s story, Julia della Croce, author of Italian Home Cooking, suggests using pistachios (here’s her recipe). Other people commenting on the post suggest sunflower seeds, pecans or walnuts. Or basically whatever fresh nuts you have in the cupboard. Bon appetit!

Here’s an update on the new veggie/vegan/pescaterian restaurant Hearth in New Hope. Beginning this Monday, August 12, they will offer Farm Market Mondays every week, a $30 prix fixe dinner featuring the freshest and most seasonal ingredients available locally. To learn more about Hearth, see the post on Bucks County Taste.

Old York Cellars in Ringoes is having another Virtual Vine Online Wine Tasting evening on Thursday, August 15 and this one I’ll be able to participate in! (Missed the last one.) Vintner Scott Gares will provide a guided wine tasting of Old York Cellars 2011 Chardonnay and 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon at the winery and online.

Virtual Vines Online Wine TastingSo how do you participate in this event? First, you can experience it in person at the winery. There will be wine paired with food samples from The Kitchen, and chocolate from Laurie’s Chocolate. But here comes the neat part. You can also participate from home by purchasing ahead of time a tasting package (including two bottles of wine, chocolates, and food-pairing suggestions, for $40) and tune into a Livestream video broadcast on Thursday evening. To make it even more fun, invite friends and cook up some of the meal suggestions.

The idea is to virtually experience the wine tasting through the video broadcast and through Old York Cellars’ social media channels on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I’ll be sipping and nibbling, and posting my thoughts too. The event begins at 7 pm, with another wine tasting at 8 pm. Also, $1 per participant will be donated to the Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund.

  1. Lynne–

I love toasted almonds in a pesto. Not exactly cheap, but less expensive than pine nuts. I have heard that some people have some sort of reaction to pine nuts from China. Never met anyone who did, though.
