Bucks Food Calendar: August 27, 2014

Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of the summer season. I’m not happy about this, but cancelling the holiday will, alas, not stop the coming of cooler weather. Thankfully, this week is packed with events that keep the flavors and fun of summer going for one more beautiful week.

Rutgers Tomatoes

Food Festivals this week. The Great Tomato Tasting at Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station and Rutgers Cooperative gives you the chance to taste over 80 heirloom and hybrid varieties of beefsteak, plum, cherry, and grape tomatoes TONIGHT. Other highlights include tasting of apples and peaches from the Experiment Station’s Tree Fruit Breeding Program along with varieties of basil and honey. This sounds delicious and I can’t imagine anything more summer-like to do to cling to what’s left of the season. Sorry for the late notice, but the event takes place TODAY from 3 pm to 7:30 pm. There’s still time!

Tonight and tomorrow night (Thursday, August 28), Matt’s Red Rooster Grill in Flemington is hosting their Ribfest. Rib lovers can treat themselves to a prix fixe four course meat-centric meal: Lamb Ribs, Pork Ribs and Beef Short Ribs are all on the menu. Go with an appetite, but be warned: this is probably not a great event for you to wear your Labor Day whites.

crab legsIf seafood is your thing, head to Fountainville this weekend for the Crabfest at the Vintage Grille. A ticket gets you a pound and a half of snow crab clusters and melted butter, Old Bay hand cut fries, local corn on the cob and coleslaw. This is the last Crabfest of the season and will be starting on Friday evening and continuing throughout the Labor Day weekend, while supplies last. Calling ahead is recommended.

Last but not least, the Polish American Festival and Country Fair at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa will be this weekend and next. Don’t miss the chance to sample Polish delicacies (read: Pierogies) and check out the 49th year of this festival. If it’s been going on this long, it’s got to be good.

Before you miss your chance… Miss Maxwell’s Clam Bar at Hamilton’s Grill Room ends September 3 and Old York Cellar’s Wine & Music Under the Stars will have its last go for the season this Friday, August 29.
