Tired of shivering? You’re in luck. This weekend the sun will be warming up Bucks County, just in time for spring festivals, farmers markets, and other outdoor fun. Also, most of us are done with our taxes (exhale sigh of relief). What better way to say goodbye to tax season than with a sunny day and a local beer (whiskey), or two?

 1. Beer Lineup at Spinnerstown Hotel

Friday, April 15, Spinnerstown Hotel, 2195 Spinnerstown Road, Quakertown, PA

Beer, Bear Republic Brewing Co., Facebook

Tax day has everyone feeling a little sour, or at least that’s what the Spinnerstown Hotel thinks. That’s why to celebrate taxes being over and done with (for now), the hotel is having a sour beer lineup on Friday, April 15.

The beers include:

Mikkeller – Spontanorange
Lost Abbey – Cuvee de Tomme
Bear Republic – Barrel Aged Tartare
Panil – Barriquée Sour
Allagash – Interlude
Jolly Pumpkin – Madragada Obscura
Free Will – Blood & Guts
… and perhaps a surprise!

5. Make a Hummingbird/Butterfly Feeder

Saturday, April 16, 3 pm, Peace Valley Nature Center, 170 North Chapman Road, Doylestown, PA

Hummingbird, Roger Burkhard
You might be thinking, how does this event have anything to do with food? While you might not be creating a feeder for yourself, attracting butterflies or hummingbirds to your yard increases the amount of pollinators you see. More pollinators means more food for us humans!

At the Peace Valley Nature Center in Doylestown, come make your own feeders. Making a hummingbird feeder costs $6 each, and a butterfly feeder costs $3 each. Pre-register and designate the number and types of feeders you would like. You’ll use upcycled materials to create your feeders, and soon you’ll be seeing some pretty creatures in your backyard.

6. Breakfast at the Perkasie Fire Co.

You’ve probably been seeing a lot of matzoh in stores, which means it’s almost time for Passover. At Bobolink Dairy & Bakehouse in Milford, NJ the matzoh is made with Pennsylvania grown Emmer flour. They make them in a single-chamber wood-fired oven, and are taking pre-orders now. They can be shipped, picked up at the farm, or sent to one of the farmers market locations that Bobolink attends. They will bring open stock to markets but the farm is recommending you reserve in advance. Matzoh is $1.50 each.

The farm is also offering matzoh-making workshops, which are a great way to prepare for the holiday with family and friends. Please note that all family members must reserve a spot in the class, including small children! The workshops are timed around the regular 2 pm farm tour, and workshop participants may take the tour at no extra charge. The first workshop starts at 12:30 pm and ends at 1:30 pm; the second is from 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm. Cost of the workshop is $15.

Need more matzoh help?

  • Bucks County Taste spent an afternoon with Nina White, baker extraordinaire, baking matzoh in her wood-fired oven a few years ago. Here’s the video.
  • This is reported to be the “best matzoh brei I have ever had.”
  • I am baking matzah for the first time in my life.

Have a great weekend!
