It’s the first weekend of May, so kick it off with some beer tastings, enjoy the return of a local wine concert series, and sip some Mint Juleps in honor of the Kentucky Derby. This Sunday, don’t forget to take your momma (or aunt, or grandma, etc.) out for a nice meal in Bucks County, or just keep it casual and take her for a firehouse breakfast.


 1. Beer Tasting: Terrapin Beer Co.

Two brewers met while working at a microbrewery in Atlanta, and so became Terrapin Beer Company. Brian “Spike” Buckowski and John Cochran decided to create craft beers that weren’t like other typical pale ales or stouts. You can try these unique brews at The Washington House in Sellersville for a beer tasting on Friday, May 6 starting at 5 pm. Make a reservation online or call 215.257.3000.

2. unWINEd Wine Concert Series

Friday, May 6, 6 – 9 pm, The Market by Shady Brook Farm at Delaware Valley University, 2100 Lower State Rd., Doylestown, PA

The Market at DelVal  is kicking off its seasonal Wine Concert Series this Friday, May 6, starting at 6 pm, weather permitting. The concerts range from local musicians with styles like bluegrass and rock. Local wines from Rose Bank Winery are available for tasting, and The Market offers gourmet cheeses and crackers to pair with your wine. The Deli & Kitchen is open until 8 pm for dinner with salads, sandwiches and desserts. Admission is free. The May 6 entertainer is The Idlewoodsmen.

3. Milk House Farm Market Chicken

Milk House Farm‘s fresh, organically fed, pasture raised chicken will be available starting Friday, May 6, and continuing until May 10. Milk House Farm raises the birds on pasture to give them a stress free environment and feeds them (besides the insects nature provides) non-GMO, organic feed. Gizzards, feet, livers, necks and hearts are available upon request. As always, what isn’t sold as fresh gets frozen and will be sold at a later date. Milk House Farm is at 1118 Slack Road, Newtown, 18940 (Upper Makefield). You can also buy their products at the Wrightstown Farmers Market.

4. CSA Open House

Saturday, May 7, 2:30 – 4:30 pm, Snipes Farm and Education Center, 890 W. Bridge Street, Morrisville, PA

It’s time to meet your farmers and see the food growing that you love to eat. Learn more about the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) at Snipes Farm and Education Center in Morrisville. Their CSA is new and improved, and with their new share system you can choose the veggies you want, join at two different levels, and pick out the produce you like each week. Also, the CSA now includes fruit, eggs, jams, and more. Come out this Saturday, May 7, to meet farm staff and figure out how you can get involved.

5. Kentucky Derby Party at RSI

Saturday, May 7, 4 – 7 pm, Rising Sun Inn, 898 Allentown Road, Telford, PA

Watch the Kentucky Derby at the Rising Sun Inn this Saturday, May 7, from 4 – 7 pm. Sip some mint juleps or a bourbon smash. Ladies are welcome to wear crazy, beautiful and big hats just like the real derby. There will be Kentucky Derby drink and food specials featuring 14 Hands Winery, Kentucky Derby Red Blend, 2013 Limited Release, and others. There will also be a raffle and prizes.

A lot of folks enjoy celebrating the Kentucky Derby even if they can’t get to the tracks. See how you can have your own Bucks County-style Kentucky Derby party. 

6. Firehouse Breakfast

Sunday, May 8,  7:30 am – 12 pm, Upper Black Eddy Fire Company, 1716 Firehouse Ln, Upper Black Eddy, PA

Ready for some pancakes? This Sunday, May 8, head to the Upper Black Eddy Fire Company for a Mother’s Day breakfast of pancakes, eggs, french toast, sausage, bacon, cream dried beef, potatoes, toast, and drinks. Proceeds of the breakfast go to the fire company. Adults cost $8, children ages five to 10 cost $4, and children under five eat for free. Take out breakfast costs $9.
