We have a day for giving thanks. We have two days for getting deals. Now we have a day for giving back! Tuesday, December 1, 2015 is the fourth annual celebration of #GivingTuesday. Be part of a national celebration of generosity, a day to give a gift that makes an impact in your local community. This is an opportunity to give an on-line donation to support the work of the causes you care about. It’s an easy way to be a part of something big, and include what you care about as a part of your holiday giving.

The project started nationally in 2012, a group of volunteers worked to bring in to Bucks County in 2013, and every week, more partners are on board to make Giving Tuesday Bucks 2015 the best one yet!

Want to support local food in Bucks? Here’s a few ideas for donating on “Giving Back Tuesday.”

Rolling Harvest Food RescueRolling Harvest Food Rescue “collects donated produce from local farms and markets, and distributes it immediately to non-profit hunger-relief agencies including food pantries, domestic violence shelters, meals on wheels, senior centers, homeless shelters and at-risk low-income adults with health challenges. In addition to the daily pick-up and delivery schedules, they also hold weekly free “farmers’ markets” at some of the sites to educate the recipients about nutrition, cooking and using the donated produce to their best benefit with no waste.” Read more about Rolling Harvest in our post, A Day in the Life: Rolling Harvest Food Rescue. Since 2006, the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance has worked to strengthen our local food system and improve availability of local, healthy, sustainably grown food. BCFA is probably best known for the bustling Wrightstown Farmers Market but they do much more.

BCFA logoMonthly meetings and summer farm tours educate and connect consumers with local food producers and topics related to sustainable food. Behind the scenes, they also build vital relationships within facets of local and regional government, educational institutions, social services, business and economic development, land stewards and others to strengthen our local food system. Sign up for their emails to find out about coming events and local food news. Better yet, become a member. You can donate here.
