There are lots of things to like about this time of year. Nice weather (recent 100 degree days excluded), baseball, summer vacations, fresh veggies and herbs from the garden. In my mind, though, the true taste of summer is a fresh, ripe, juicy tomato.
Give me a shaker of [...]
It’s been over a year since I published Local food blogs – part one, sharing some of the interesting writing being done locally about food. It is a pleasure to read these blogs and websites. They give a view into the workings of our local foodshed in a way that is both informative [...]
Feeling a little damp today. Rain, humidity. Guess it’s officially summer in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Either that or the Amazon rain forest has moved way north. Ho hum. But still lots of fun things to eat and do this week. Check out the abbreviated calendar below and click on Food Events in Bucks County [...]
Yep. It’s this Sunday. You better get your act together. Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19, 2011.
Do people still buy ties for Dads? Or barbecue equipment? Or is that all advertising gobbly gook? More like polo shirts and ugly shorts, no? What truly is reality?
Before I get too metaphysical, let’s get [...]
I’ve been told from time to time by regular readers of Bucks County Taste that they are a bit jealous of my “job” (The word “job” implies I make real money at this.) “Oh,” they say, “You go around and eat all this amazing food, and shop all over the place. I wish [...]
I was seeing RED everywhere. Then signs for “Lobster.” Then…Trinity Episcopal Church. Huh? What exactly was going on in Solebury, and where did lobster come into it?
I was, of course, suspicious. Lobster? In Bucks County? I’m a snob. We go to Maine every year and gorge ourselves on very, very fresh lobster. We sit [...]
by guest blogger Rich Baringer,
We’ve all heard this at one time or another: “Eat your peas! There are starving children in Africa!” It’s cliché, but true—millions of children and adults are going hungry all over the world. We see the pictures of African villages and those in war-torn countries all the time. [...]
It’s time to do your weekly food shopping. Walking into the store, you head first to the produce section. There’s microgreens from Blue Moon Acres, apples from Solebury Orchards and Manoff Market Gardens, squash, corn, tomatoes, greens, root vegetables, onions, garlic – you name it – all from local [...]
When I was growing up, my father had a 6×6 foot garden plot in our tiny backyard in Northeast Philadelphia. The amount of food he coaxed out of it was astonishing – beautiful, red “Big Boy” tomatoes, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, carrots, radishes, onions, lettuce, spinach, and did I mention zucchini? I’m not about [...]
by guest blogger Rich Baringer,
Even thought the weather hasn’t been reminding us, it is springtime. And that means fresh, local veggies are starting to appear. How long we’ve waited.
One of my favorite spring vegetables is asparagus. Oh, you can buy South American spears all winter in the grocery stores, [...]
A friend sent me an email to tell me that Jules Thin Crust Pizza was offering a Passover Pizza this year. This I had to check out.
Just a little background for non-Jews. In observance of the eight day holiday, Jews not only eat lots of matzah, but we also avoid any leavened products. [...]
by guest blogger Rich Baringer,
It’s the time of the year for things to start ramping up from the Deep South to Canada. We’re right in the middle of the brief time that ramps, or wild leeks, are available in forests all along the East Coast.
Ramps grow in bunches in the [...]
I am 49 years old, and I am baking matzah for the first time in my life.
Not that baking your own matzah is a normal thing for an average Jewish-American woman to do. In fact, my mother’s response was, “Why would you want to do that?” All my life I have known matzah – [...]
Just had a great breakfast at Vera’s Country Cafe in Ottsville. I had the “Fun Guy” Omelet (lots of fungi, aka, mushrooms) in it, Mark had the Cheese Steak Omelet – beef, peppers, onions and provolone, with marinara sauce on top – which was fantastic. Also loved the corned beef hash with carmelized [...]
As mentioned on Bucks County Taste in the past, the Doylestown Food Club is a group of 50 or so households who have joined together to buy from local producers on a biweekly basis. The club has been operating for over a year but in order to keep going—let alone grow!—they [...]
