It’s September already?!? Okay, I said it and got it out of my system. Mind you, this weather is pleasantly like September but I don’t want to jinx it by prancing around shouting my glee – which is what I really feel like doing. Windows open, breezes, comfortable nights, sunny days.

Like this weekend. Sunday may be a little warm, but I’ll still take it. What a perfect weekend to get out and enjoy the end of summer, which let’s be honest, we are all looking forward to after the heat and humidity we’ve had. There are still lots of local veggies and fruits to be had, and decent weather to can, blanch and freeze it. Or just go and sit on a patio somewhere, sipping a nice drink and toasting another beautiful evening in Bucks County.

What fun! But we are very glad to be in our ‘Old Bucks Home’ (sorry, Stephen Foster). I had forgotten just how much fried, salty food there is in the South. I know they must have fresh vegetables and fruit – it just doesn’t seem to make it to the restaurants. (Deep-Fried Dill Pickle Chips. I’m not kidding.) I’ll say it once again. We are very fortunate to live in Bucks County.

A big heads-up – the 62nd Annual Middletown Grange Fair starts on Wednesday, August 18th and goes through Sunday, August 22nd. It’s kind of our local county fair, and if you’ve never been, go. The food is…so-so, but the chicken dinner is a great deal (see last year’s post).

Ah, but this weekend. A little cooler, maybe some rain (okay by me). And so much going on. Where do I start? How about with wine…?

Check out the many events at local wineries every weekend. Every Friday evening, enjoy Friday Night un(Wine)d Concerts at The Market by Shady Brook at Del Val College (6 – 9 pm) or the companion event at Shady Brook Farm’s location in Yardley, also music and also 6 – 9 pm. Wine Tasting for Singles happens at Crossing Vineyards this Friday evening, as does their popular Summer Music Series, where you can picnic, sip wine and enjoy great music. For details see our full Food Events in Bucks County calendar.

On Saturday, be part of history (hopefully) at The Great Pennsylvania Wine Toast also at Crossing Vineyards. Thousands of people in more than 50 wineries across Pennsylvania will join the toastmaster, racing legend Mario Andretti, in an attempt to set a world record for the largest wine tasting ever conducted. The current record of 17,429 participants was set by more than 400 pubs across the U.K. in 2009. Entry tickets are $5.00 and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Fund to Benefit Children & Youth. The event begins at 3:30, with the toast taking place at 4:00 pm under the watchful eyes of folks from the Guinness Book of World Records. There’ll be music and wine for the toast, including a commemorative glass for you to keep.

Every weekend, Phillips’ Fine Wines in Stockton holds beer tastings on Friday afternoons and wine tastings on Saturday afternoons (go to the Stockton Market first, then go get a sip or two!). Or ride the Grapevine Express Wine & Cheese Pairing on the historic New Hope-Ivyland Railroad on Saturday or Sunday this weekend (5 – 7 pm). Listen to Dixie Land music by the vines, too, at Unionville Vineyards in Ringoes, NJ, on Saturday afternoon from 1 – 4 pm.

Sunday also brings two more wine events. Music Under the Arbor takes place at Alba Vineyards in Milford, NJ in the afternoon (lunch at Lovin’ Oven in Frenchtown, then up to the vineyard?). Or maybe you need to learn more about wine first? Take A Dummies Guide to Wine Tasting at Crossing Vineyards Sunday afternoon.

Peaches, peaches, peaches at Manoff Market Gardens in Solebury. Come to Manoff’s for their annual Peach Festival, including hay rides, peach ice cream making and wonderful yellow and white peaches. Yum.

And although it isn’t strictly about food, check out the 1st Annual Newtown Music Fest on Sunday, August 15th at Shady Brook Farm in Yardley. From noon to 10 p.m., the Newtown Corporation and Cambridge Sound Studios of Newtown will present a dozen bands along with food and beverages from Newtown restaurants, including the Temperance House, Joey G’s and the Green Parrot. Several Bucks County wineries will also be there selling wine by the glass and by the bottle.

As for farm markets and what is available this week, well, just about anything you can imagine. It’s August! All of the markets are listed below. Go check out a new one, and see what you find. Let me know where your favorite vendors are, and why.

Kramer: Well, they’re in…

Jerry: What’s in?

Kramer: The Macanaw peaches, Jerry! The Macanaw peaches!

Jerry: Ah, right. The ones from Oregon that are only ripe for two weeks a year…

Kramer: Yeah…I waited all year for this (bites the peach). Ooooh, this is fantastic…Makes your taste buds come alive…It’s like having a circus in your mouth! Jerry, this is a miracle of nature that exists for a brief period. It’s like the Aurora Borealis!

Kramer may be exaggerating a little bit, but not much. When you bite into a fresh peach for the first time each summer, your taste buds do come alive. Sort of like you’ve never tasted anything quite so good before. (By the way, there is no such thing as a Macanaw peach.)

Peaches are one of my favorite fruits. But there is nothing more disappointing than biting into a dry, mealy, bland peach. And so, I present to you tips for finding a peach that will make you very happy.

Peaches, a member of the rose family (along with apricots, cherries, plums and almonds), don’t ripen after they are picked (although they do get softer). So it’s important to choose fruit that is already ripe.

First, look for an even background color of golden yellow for yellow-fleshed peaches or a creamy yellow for white-fleshed. That red blush that you often see doesn’t have anything to do with ripeness. Any green around the stem means it’s not ripe.

Look for a well-defined crease.

The flesh should give slightly. If it’s a bit hard, they will soften on the counter at room temperature. You can quicken the process by putting them in a paper bag.

If the skin is wrinkled or shriveled, put it down. It’s old and past its prime (I know the feeling).

The best indicator of ripeness, however, is smell. Take a nice big sniff…does it smell like you hope it will taste? If so, then that’s the one you want.

Store peaches at room temperature until they soften to the extent that you wish. Then put them in the refrigerator crisper drawer. They’ll last for 5 days to a week in there. Whatever you’re not going to use within that time, you should freeze.

For my money, the best way to eat a fresh, ripe peach is to eat it out of hand. You know, when the juice drips down your chin and all over your hand. Yum!

Another great way to bring out the flavors of a sweet peach is to grill it. The fruit should be slightly firm. Halve it, pit it and brush it with some vegetable oil. If you’re adventurous, sprinkle a little cayenne or other spice on it. Then grill over a medium fire until tender. It’s good as a dessert (with some good vanilla ice cream), but even better as a side dish for grilled fish or meat.

Of course, there are a million recipes for peach cobblers, peach brown betties, peach crumbles, etc. As usual, I turn to Cook’s Illustrated magazine for a great peach dessert. But hurry! Good peaches are only around for a short time—sort of like the Aurora Borealis!

BLUEBERRY-PEACH COBBLER WITH LEMON-CORNMEAL BISCUIT TOPPING (serves 6)
Published July 1, 2004

I’ve also made this with blackberries. If your peaches are firm, you can peel with a vegetable peeler. If they’re too soft for that, blanch for a minute or two and shock in ice water. The peels should come off easily. In the topping, low-fat or nonfat yogurt can be used, but it will be a bit less rich. This recipe can be doubled to serve a crowd. Use a 13″ x 9″ baking dish and increase baking times in steps 2 and 4 by about 5 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Left-overs (if there are any) can be reheated in a 350° oven until warmed.

INGREDIENTS

For the filling:

2 pounds ripe, but firm peaches
1 cup fresh blueberries
¼ cup sugar
1 tsp cornstarch
1 tbsp lemon juice
Pinch salt

For the topping:

1 cup minus 2 tbsp unbleached all-purpose flour
2 tbsp stone-ground cornmeal
½ tsp grated lemon zest
3 tbsp plus 1 tsp sugar
¾ tsp baking powder
¼ tsp baking soda
¼ tsp salt
5 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cut into ¼” cubes
1/3 cup plain whole milk yogurt

HOW TO

Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 425°.

For the filling: Peel peaches; then halve and pit. Using a small spoon, scoop out and discard the dark flesh from the pit area. Cut each half into 4 wedges. Gently toss peaches and sugar together in a large bowl; let stand 30 minutes, tossing several times. Drain peaches in a colander set over a large bowl. Whisk ¼ cup drained juice (discard extra), cornstarch, lemon juice and salt together in a small bowl. Toss peach juice mixture with peach slices and blueberries; transfer to an 8″ square glass baking dish. Bake until peaches begin to bubble around the edges, about 10 minutes.

For the topping:While peaches are baking, in a food processor, pulse flour, cornmeal, lemon zest, 3 tbsp sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt to combine. Scatter butter over and pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal, about ten 1-second pulses. Transfer to a medium bowl; add yogurt and toss with a rubber spatula until cohesive dough is formed. (Don’t over mix the dough or the biscuits will be tough.) Break the dough into 6 evenly sized, but roughly shaped mounds and set aside.

To assemble and bake: After the peaches have baked 10 minutes, remove them from the oven and place the dough mounds on top, spacing them at least ½” apart (they should not touch). Sprinkle each mound with a portion of the remaining sugar. Bake until topping is golden brown and fruit is bubbling, 16-18 minutes. Cool cobbler on a wire rack until warm, about 20 minutes. Serve and enjoy!

The internet seems awfully quiet this afternoon. Everyone gone off to the shore or wherever? Ah well, still lots to do and eat here in Bucks County!

In particular…the first New Hope Summer Wine Faire debuts this weekend at Tuscany at the Towpath House in New Hope. Find out more at our previous post. Looks like fun – wine, food…hanging out by the canal, under the shady trees. What could be better?

Ice cream is everywhere too, but in particular why not get up to Chubby’s in Plumsteadville Saturday evening for a 1940′s-style USO Show? Donations will benefit the building of a veterans memorial in Plumsteadville.

On the firehouse circuit, Springtown Fire Company is having a clam bake also on Saturday to raise much needed funds. Tickets include 2 dozen clams, all you can eat shrimp, hot dogs, corn on the cob and more. There will also be a raffle for a timeshare week in Key West or Aruba. Firehouse breakfasts are also going on at the Plumsteadville Fire house (every Sunday) and the Haycock Fire Company. We recommend both.

What can you expect to find produce-wise this week at local farm markets? Ah, I knew you’d want to know that. That’s why I did a special post on farm markets and what’s growing earlier this week. Read more here.

Tune into the blog this week for more local food and recipes, stories and fun places to eat. Make sure to join our email list (look to the right, on the sidebar), Twitter and Facebook page. Especially the latter because I often post little tidbits and late-breaking news there.

Many of the farmers’ markets have chef demos, music and activities for the whole family. See our earlier post of farmers’ markets in Bucks to find the one closest to you, or most convenient to your schedule. Also, many individual farm stands are bursting with beautiful fresh-from-the-farm produce. Fred Slack’s Farm in Forest Grove starting selling their delicious tomatoes this week and Fairview Farm’s famous peaches have started coming in (Pineville). I know there are other great finds out there. Be sure to let me know, and I’ll post the information here and on Facebook.

What kind of produce can you expect to find this week? Well, just about everything that can grow in Bucks County! Look for the following (not all will be available at all markets):

Apricots, Arugula, Basil, Beans, Beets, Blackberries, Broccoli, Butter Lettuce, Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Cauliflower, Chard, Sweet Corn, Cucumbers, Dandelion Greens, Eggplant, Fennel, Garlic Scapes, Garlic, Green Beans, Kale, Kohlrabi, Melons, Mesculun mixes, Mushrooms, Mustard Greens, Sweet White Onions, Red Onions, Parsley, Peaches, Peppers, Plums, Potatoes, Radishes, Raspberries, Romaine lettuce, Salad Mix, Scallions, Shallots, Summer Squash, Swiss Chard, Tomatillos, Tomatoes (heirloom, cherry and slicing), Wax Beans, and Zucchini.

But that’s not all. In addition, many local farmers’ markets have vendors selling: pastured pork, beef, and chicken; cheeses and yogurt from pastured animals (cow, goat); ice cream; pastured eggs; bread and baked goods; preserved products; handmade soaps and lotions; honey; maple syrup; organic, fair trade, locally roasted coffees; prepared foods and fiber products, and even seafood.

On Thursday afternoon/evening, we have several markets open, Lower Makefield, Springtown and New Hope. The Springtown Farmers’ Market will be celebrating the rich history of farming in Springfield Township and its surrounding communities with local farmers, special guests and fun events for the whole family. Jeffrey L. Marshall V.P. of Resource Protection at Heritage Conservancy and author will share information from his 30 year career in conservation and knowledge of Bucks County historical structures. Natalie Searl, award winning photgrapher, will exhibit her photos and note cards of farm animals and bucolic Upper Bucks County. Second generation local farmer Clarence Berger will share antique farm equipment. The Springfield Historical Society will display historical info, posters, pamphlets and a newsletter featuring farming life in the 1930′s in Springfield Township.

The Lower Makefield Market welcomes a new product this week – cheese from Wholesome Dairy Farms, a Berks County dairy which produces raw milk and cheese from pasture grazed Ayrshire cows. You can also find fresh cut flowers, blue ribbon eggs, pastured chicken, turkey burgers, chicken sausage, chicken pot pie, artisan breads; foccaccia; seasonal fruit pies; baked goods; honey; gourmet prepared whole grain salads; fresh mozzarella; and shitake, oyster, crimini and portabella mushrooms, and more.

Friday brings the new Warrington Farmers’ Market and the Ottsville Farmers’ Market, along with the Stockton Market (NJ). Saturday (whew) is Doylestown, Wrightstown, Perkasie, Indian Valley (Telford), Plumsteadville and Stockton. Sunday is the Saucon Valley Market (Hellerstown), the Hunterdon Land Trust Market at Dvoor Farm (Flemington, and also on Thursdays) and, again, the Stockton Market. And beginning the week, on Tuesdays, is the Langhorne Farmers Market, followed on Wednesday by The Farmers’ Market @ Playwicki Farm in Feasterville. Details for all these markets can be found in our calendar, Food Events in Bucks County.

Sharing the harvest. Both the Wrightstown (Saturdays) and New Hope (Thursdays) markets are collecting fresh produce donations to give to the needy. Buy some extra food and donate it at the market booth. Also – all you backyard gardeners! Carousel Gardens in Wrightstown/Newtown (on Rt. 413) is accepting extra produce from your summer bounty on Fridays and Saturdays, which then goes to Philabundance.

Shoppers at the Market can enjoy the pig roast along with roasted corn on the cob, a cool drink as well as cole slaw and dessert provided by Market Roost Fine Catering in Flemington. All this for just $10 for adults, $7 for kids under 12.

“The Farmers’ Market is a great place for our community to come together” said Catherine Suttle, the Market Manager. “We’re excited to invite the public to come and enjoy farm fresh food and the beauty of the Dvoor Farm. Relax in the shade of a tent and listen to live music. You can stock up on fresh food and support local farmers at the same time. Where else can you do all that? We’re grateful to our vendors and local businesses for making this celebratory pig roast possible.”

The Hunterdon Land Trust started the Farmers’ Market in 2007 to support local farmers, and it has been open seasonally on Sundays for the past three years. This is the first year the Market is open on Thursdays, making it easier for people who work in Flemington but live elsewhere to take advantage of the fresh, local, delicious foods for sale. Thursday shoppers are treated products not available on Sundays, like Oak Grove Plantation’s huge variety of herbs, vegetables, corn meals and flours. Members of the land trust also get special deals at the Thursday Market, previous specials have included hand made soaps, herb plants and reduced prices on organic produce.

“On behalf of the land trust, and the farmers and producers our market supports, I’d like to thank the many volunteers who help out at the market as well as the land trust members and the local businesses that support our efforts to preserve farmland and natural areas in Hunterdon County. I’d like to extend a special thank you to our Farmers’ Market sponsors: Stem Brothers, Inc., Basil Bandwagon Natural Market, Matt’s Red Rooster and Team Capital Bank” says Margaret Waldock, Executive Director of the Hunterdon Land Trust.

The Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers’ Market at the Historic Dvoor Farm is located at 111 Mine Street, Flemington. The market is open Sundays (including the 4th of July) 9 am to 1 pm and Thursdays from 3 to 7 pm.

The Hunterdon Land Trust is Hunterdon County, New Jersey’s only countywide land trust. Incorporated as a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization in 1996, the land trust is committed to preserving and protecting the rural landscapes and natural resources of Hunterdon County.

Looks like a great Memorial Day weekend weather-wise, with chance of some thunderstorms here and there – but, hey, it’s summer in Eastern Pennsylvania. C’est la vie.

So what are you cooking up? We’ve got a bison London Broil from Backyard Bison in the fridge, ready to be marinated. [Don't know where to get your Memorial Day BBQ meat? See our post on local meat stores and producers.]

And then there are the greens we got from our first week at the CSA. Yikes. Lettuce, Swiss rainbow chard, kale, collards, senposai, arugula, vitamin greens, mizuna, and bok choy, radish greens (and gorgeous radishes), and, of course, strawberries. I think there will be some blanching and freezing in my weekend plans.

Mostly we just plan on putting the finishing touches on our little sailboat in the hopes of getting in up to Lake Nockamixon next weekend. That and sitting around with some cheese and cocktails on the balcony. Welcome summer! Come on in!

The Ottsville Farmers’ Market opens for the season this afternoon, from 3 to 7 pm. One of their new vendors is Metropolitan Seafood, who some of you may know from the Stockton Farmers’ Market. Great selection, good fish and nice people. Stop in and say hello. It’s a festive market including local farmers and independent local businesses offering produce, fresh seafood, local meats, baked goods, eggs, fruits, artisanal bread, organic horse feed, alpaca, wool and mohair knit products, jams, jellies, preserves, culinary sauces, prepared food, homemade soaps, raw chips, coffee, chocolate, plants, herbs, music and more. Stop by and say hello. Regular updates may be found throughout the season at www.lindenhillgardens.com.

Saturday will be the opening day of the Plumsteadville Grange Farmers’ Market too which takes place on Saturdays from 9 am – noon, at the Plumsteadville Grange near the intersection of Route 611 and Keller’s Church Road until October 30th.

Not as many pancake breakfasts going on this weekend, but we would like to check out two annual ones in Doylestown on Memorial Day - one at the Masonic Lodge and the other at Salem United Church of Christ (who will also be doing their annual Strawberry Festival June 5th). Too many pancakes? I don’t think so.

This new and explosive event will be taking place every Friday night all summer. Get your seat at some nice outdoor patio and enjoy!
