If you never had a chance to enjoy Chef Mario Korenstein’s delicious cuban-influenced creations, go now. As for the reason, ”a combination of things just make this the right time to close,” says co-owner Dave Van Ess. A bad economy, difficult location (Penns Park, in Wrightstown), a year of bad weather and even some landlord issues. Right now they have no plans to open another restaurant, says Van Ess, so please stop by while you can.

It’s here. It’s official. Even with a little hot weather today, there is no doubt about it. September is here, along with lots of great food events. In particular, we have a whole crop of farm-to-table dinners coming up that I want to highlight.

This Sunday, September 12th, the Bucks County Symphony hosts A Symphony of Flavors, their third annual wine and food pairing event, at the beautiful Prallsville Mills in Stockton, NJ. A specially selected group of “boutique wines” will be matched with dishes created by some of the best local chefs. Marnie Old, Philadelphia based wine author, educator, and sommelier, will provide expert commentary at the Patron Party, and will discuss current trends in wine at the main tasting event.

Participating restaurants include Café at Rosemont in Rosemont, NJ, The Waterwheel Restaurant in Doylestown, PA, Jake’s Restaurant in Flemington, NJ, Jack’s Roadhouse in Lahaska, PA, Erini Restaurant in Ewing, NJ, Maize Restaurant in Perkasie, PA, Vine & Fig Tree Bistro in Doylestown, PA and Cal’s Comfort Café, Milford, NJ. Bucks County Biscotti in Perkasie and The Coffee Scoop in Pipersville will provide dessert and coffee. The event wine sponsor is Central Liquors in Flemington, NJ. Proceeds from the event benefit the Bucks County Symphony. The evening begins at 3:30 pm with an afternoon limited admission Patron Party followed by the main Wine and Food Pairing Event, starting at 5:00 P.M. Tickets are $75 per person for the main event. For more information, please see their website.

Next weekend on Sunday, September 19th you’ve got a hard choice. There are TWO farm to table dinners in Bucks County and one in Hunterdon, all with great food and chefs. Zone 7, the local food distributor, is partnering with Manoff Market Gardens in Solebury to host a delicious dinner from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. Mark Miller and his team from Hamilton’s Grill Room will showcase the best offerings of the farm, with a strong emphasis on Manoff ’s fruits and vegetables, in a special four-course meal with complimentary wines specifically chosen to accompany each course from Crossing Vineyards & Winery in Washington Crossing, PA. The Dinners On The Farm series, which combines behind-the-scenes farm tours with fresh and seasonal meals prepared by luminary local chefs, will host the final dinner in this year’s series in October at Blooming Glen Farm in Perkasie, PA with Chef Vincent Peterson of Kindle Café in Lambertville, NJ. Tickets are $135 per person. For more information or to register, visit www.freshfromzone7.com.

Next choice? Equally tempting. How about a farm to table dinner at None Such Farms, featuring their famous farm-raised beef and farm-grown produce, all prepared by Chef Max Hansen? Al Fresco on the Farm will take place on Sunday, September 19, from 5 pm to 9:30 pm. Check out the wonderful menu online. Tickets are $125 per person, and proceeds will benefit the Food Pantry of Fisherman’s Mark in Lambertville and the Doylestown Food Pantry. To purchase tickets, stop in at None Such Farm Market or call them at 215.794.5201, ext. 2.

Finally, also next Sunday, the Acme Screening Room, which shows interesting and fun movies in Lambertville year around, is hosting a farm to table dinner and vacation auction at the Chimney Hill Estate in Lambertville. Dinner will be prepared by Chef Chris Georgett using seasonal ingredients donated by local farms, and will include entrée (meat & vegetarian option) and desert provided by The Chocolate Box (it’s also BYOB). The event takes place from 4 pm to 7:30 pm. The highlight will be the auction including vacation packages in Lake Tahoe, Myrtle Beach. Tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at door You can buy tickets at this website.

And that’s just September. I didn’t mention the great event occurring at Linden Hill Gardens in Ottsville on September 25th because, well, it’s sold out. I didn’t want you to feel bad. Chef, architect, and local restaurant icon Jim Hamilton, of Hamilton’s Grill Room, has been working with Kristen Perry, of The Kitchen Potager at Linden Hill Gardens, to build an outdoor, earthen oven. On that Saturday he’ll be conducting one of his famous “Cooking Class Dinners.” One person arrives at 2:30 pm for the class and dinner preparation, the other person comes at 6:30 pm as the guest for dinner in the lovely barn at Linden Hill. When I chatted with Jim at the Pineville Tavern last month, he was really excited. He loves doing the classes, especially with the outdoor oven. Hopefully Kristen will schedule another similar event next year. Keep an eye on her website or email her at kristin@lindenhillgardens.com for more information about future events, including another ”class-dinner” in October.

If I’ve left any events out that you know of, please let me know. Just email us at info@buckscountytaste.com.

I often see something and think, “That would be a great little day trip.” We don’t always do it – the chores need to be done, our sailboat beckons, or sometimes we just feel like sticking close to home after a long week. But it’s stuff I would love to share. So here is my first in a series of “Food Adventures” – easy day trips, combining a few interesting stops and good, local food.

If you love cheese – and I mean really good cheese – you must try some from the Bobolink Dairy Farm. Jonathan and Nina White recently moved their farm – cows, equipment, the whole shebang – from Vernon to Milford, New Jersey (read more about how this all happened at Artisan Cheesemakers and Land Trust collaborate to preserve historic farm). They make aged, earthy, rich, complex cheeses out of raw milk from grass-fed, pastured cows. They also make wonderful, crunchy artisanal bread, baked in an earthen oven (still under construction at the new farm).

The move to Milford happened just this summer and the Whites have been slowly ramping back up to normal, including selling at farmers’ markets from New York City to nearby Flemington, at the Hunterdon Land Trust’s Farmers’ Market at Dvoor Farm on Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings. But now you can visit the farm too! So here’s my food adventure suggestion. I hope we can do it this weekend:

Breakfast at the Lovin’ Oven in Frenchtown. See some photos I posted from my last visit. Yum.

Off to Bobolink Dairy Farm in nearby Milford to see the new farm and buy some cheese. The farm tour takes you through the milking parlor, creamery, bakery, cheese cave, and a hike up the hill to see the cows and the beautiful land. A full tour takes about an hour, plus cheese tasting. And, there’s more…

At the end of the tour the Whites give a coupon for a discount on a growler of ale at the local Milford brewery pub, The Ship Inn, serving authentic British ales, including a Farmhouse Ale inspired by Bobolink cheeses. The Whites say the food at the Ship Inn is “decidedly unauthentic for a British pub, insofar as it it excellent. [Their] burgers are made from 100% grassfed cows of my neighbor Harry Swift, from whom we got our little piggies. Chef Lon’s specials are also a treat, as is the fish and chips, which is served with the best mushy peas this side of the Mersey.” Sounds good to me! [Note: on the Ship Inn's website they list other fun things to do nearby.]

If we have the energy and time on the way home, we may stop by Frenchtown for their annual Riverfest. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras. The festivities begin at noon and go until 6 pm.

Or…stop by to watch the polo matches on the Pennsylvania side of the river at Tinicum Park. The polo takes place every Saturday from May 15 to October 9th from 2 – 4 pm. Admission is $5 per carload. You can park at the sidelines of the polo field and have a tailgate picnic or sit in the shade of the big striped tent for members of the public. See the Tinicum Park Polo Club website for more info.

I could go on, but I know we’ll have to get home at some point to feed the dogs and start cocktail hour.

Here are directions and a map for this little trip.
[Note: this may not open in some versions of IExplorer. Sorry.]
Mind you, this weather is pleasantly like September but I don’t want to jinx it by prancing around shouting my glee – which is what I really feel like doing. Windows open, breezes, comfortable nights, sunny days.

Like this weekend. Sunday may be a little warm, but I’ll still take it. What a perfect weekend to get out and enjoy the end of summer, which let’s be honest, we are all looking forward to after the heat and humidity we’ve had. There are still lots of local veggies and fruits to be had, and decent weather to can, blanch and freeze it. Or just go and sit on a patio somewhere, sipping a nice drink and toasting another beautiful evening in Bucks County.

I think there are fewer things more pleasant than strolling on a balmy summer evening. So it was when we went to the Grange Fair Thursday night. There’s also a palpable excitement in the crowd. Is this what draws people to fairs, and what has for so long?

We were very hungry, arriving about 7 pm, so didn’t go for the famous Chicken Dinner. But I think we should have. We started with hot dogs, then a Caesar chicken wrap later, with soft ice cream for Mark. I don’t like to be negative or preachy, but I must say, the food at the Grange Fair leaves much to be desired. Lots of fried stuff and, let’s be honest, junk. And yours truly has been dealing with a digestive problem all day. Enough said. You may want to eat before going. In fact, it’s kind of ironic that the best food at the fair is in the Exhibition Halls, where local farmers and gardeners bring their veggies for judging.

But we were in a rush. Mark wanted to see the bunnies! And the goats, the sheep, and the cows, etc. But especially the bunnies. In a previous life he had house rabbits, and we probably would today if we didn’t have a terrier and a schnauzer. I also really enjoyed watching one of the judging events for sheep. All of the handlers/owners were teenagers. It still amazes me to see kids and teens so into raising animals in this day and age of tech toys and other forms of entertainment. But it is alive and well in Bucks, and hope it stays that way.

Here’s some photos from the evening.

Fresh mozzarella – check. Basil – check. Beautiful, multi-colored heirloom tomatoes from the farm – check. But then the weather turned cool and rainy and I just wanted something warmer. Then I remembered seeing a recipe on Cook’s Illustrated for a Pasta Caprese. Perfect. Easy and great for late summer when the tomatoes are still luscious. I do recommend using fresh mozzarella if it is at all possible. Enjoy!

PASTA CAPRESE

Serves 4 to 6. Published in Cooks Illustrated, July 1, 2007.

This dish will be very warm, not hot. The success of this recipe depends on high-quality ingredients, including ripe, in-season tomatoes and a fruity olive oil (the test kitchen prefers Columela Extra-Virgin). Don’t skip the step of freezing the mozzarella, as freezing prevents it from turning chewy when it comes in contact with the hot pasta. If handmade buffalo- or cow’s-milk mozzarella is available (it’s commonly found in gourmet and cheese shops packed in water), we highly recommend using it, but skip the step of freezing and add it to the tomatoes while marinating. Additional lemon juice or up to 1 teaspoon sugar can be added at the end to taste, depending on the ripeness of the tomatoes.

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2-4 teaspoons fresh lemon juice (see note above)
1 small garlic clove , minced or pressed through a garlic press (about 1/2 teaspoon)
1 small shallot , minced fine (about 2 tablespoons)
1 1/2 pounds ripe tomatoes , cored, seeded, and cut into 1/2-inch dice
12 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese , cut into 1/2-inch cubes (see note above)
1 pound penne pasta or other short tubular or curly pasta such as fusilli or campanelle
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
1 teaspoon sugar (see note above)

HOW TO

Whisk oil, 2 teaspoons lemon juice, garlic, shallot, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper together in large bowl. Add tomatoes and gently toss to combine; set aside. Do not marinate tomatoes for longer than 45 minutes.

While tomatoes are marinating, place mozzarella on plate and freeze until slightly firm, about 10 minutes. [If using fresh mozzarella, skip this step, but add cheese to tomato mixture above). Bring 4 quarts water to rolling boil in stockpot. Add 1 tablespoon salt and pasta, stir to separate, and cook until al dente. Drain well.

Add pasta and mozzarella to tomato mixture and gently toss to combine. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir in basil; adjust seasonings with salt, pepper, and additional lemon juice or sugar, if desired, and serve immediately.

I got news from Tabora Farms in Chalfont that they now have u-pick apples including Tydeman and MacIntosh, with red and golden delicious to follow in about two weeks. Check out their website or Facebook page for updates. Solebury Orchards reports on their website that Gala apples will be ready for picking around August 28th.

Of course the big news this weekend is the Middletown Grange Fair, in its 62nd year, held on the Middletown Grange grounds in Wrightstown (just north of Newtown). If you’ve never been – and even if you have – go! It’s a lot of fun, full of great exhibits, live, beautiful animals, food and amusements. And the Grange is a great cause to support – keeping farming and livestock a part of Bucks County for hopefully a long time to come. For schedule of events, see their website. I’ll do a post later today or Sunday of some photos. The fair runs through Sunday.

Farmers’ markets are still going strong with just about every vegetable and lovely seasonal fruit you can imagine. For a list of farmers’ markets in Bucks County and nearby, see the events calendar below or at our Food Events in Bucks County online calendar.
