Another giving opportunity – this Wednesday, November 18th

by guest blogger Susan Sprague Yeske

Just about everyone knows somebody who has lost a job as the national recession grinds on, and may know someone who is having trouble paying the bills.

The most basic of all needs is the need to eat, and that’s what will bring together a team of 100 volunteers and 30,000 pounds of donated produce on Wednesday.

Farmers Against Hunger, a New Jersey charity, will gather the produce – potatoes, sweet potatoes, apples and onions – from donating farms and bring it to Terhune Orchards in Lawrenceville, NJ. There the 100 volunteers from a variety of service organizations, high schools and colleges will sort it and create 3,000 holiday baskets. The baskets will be given to churches and charities throughout the region, where, hopefully, a turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce will be added to make a family meal worth being thankful for.

Farmers Against Hunger is a unique hunger-relief program with a focus on fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables. Since the program started in 1996 over 15 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables have been delivered, free of charge, to those in need.

Volunteers who want to help create the baskets can come to Terhune Orchards from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 18.
